Just thinking about the place is heavenly.
Breathing crisp clear air, drinking water from both small and large waterfalls, picking wild strawberries and chilling bottles of drinks in the chilled waters of the lakes.
That sounded good didn't it. And there are loads more to Sikkim then just that. The picturisque mountain-scapes, the beautiful greenery and the people; It all makes for the most beautiful holiday you can ever have.
My father was an Army officer and he was posted in Sikkim (Chungthang) for awhile. Sikkim was a field posting so my mother and myself used to go and stay with him during my summer vacations only. But how I looked forward to it.
For anyone who is looking for a short getaway; a week should be perfect, Sikkim is the place to go. The best time to make the trip would be around April when it isn't too cold and there are a little less rains. The rains can otherwise ruin a trip as landslides are very common up there.
In Sikkim the places to really spend some time are Gangtok, ChungThang and Nathula(Chinese Border). There is also La Chung which is famous for it's hot springs. The best place to stay would be the government guesthouses which will work out economical as well. The last time I went there was about 12 years ago so I wont be able to give you guys the latest prices and things but what I will tell you is that this is one place you just have to see to believe.
