Set against the backdrop of South Korea, the film is about Simran (Kangna), an alcoholic going through one of the most difficult phases of her life. While she is struggling to put her life back on the right track she meets Akash (Emraan), who is a singer, and brings a ray of hope into her dark and depressing life.

But Simran has a past, which keeps haunting her. She is unable to shut away the memories of Daya (Shiney) - a dreaded gangster whom she had an affair with. He is the most sought after underworld fugitive from India.

Totally unaware of Simran's past life, Akash falls in love with her.

What happens when Daya discovers her relationship with Akash - does he stay away from them and allow them to live a normal and peaceful life or does he blackmail them?

The initial reels of Gangster are devoted to establishing the key characters in the film. But it is the second half that catches the viewer unaware.

The plans of of capturing the don are very well executed and it is these chilling moments that are the mainstay of this enterprise. Director Anurag Basu has treated these sequences with utmost care and the result is an edge-of-the-seat thriller which keeps you hooked to the goings-on till the last frame.

There are several sequences which remain etched in your memory even after the show has ended, notable among them being:

  • Shiney confronting Emraan in the seoul and the fight that follows,

  • Police entering Kangana's home and wrecking havoc

  • The climax of the film, the fight to finish.

However,Gangster has its share of weaknesses too:

  • One, the characterisation of Emraan seems half-baked.Why did not he accept that he is a father of Kangana's son?

  • Two, the film tends to drag slightly towards the middle of the second half. Trimming them is essential.

Director Anurag surprises you with his command over the script and techinique. Despite being his fourth film, he has handled the complex of scenes with sensitivity. As a writer, he has not given too many lines to Shiney, but worked hard on his look and expressions.

The film scores in the technical department. Cinematography is brilliant. The lighting in the night scenes, mainly those involving Shiney, deserves special mention. The background score is outstanding. In fact, the score plays a major role in elevating every sequence of the film. Action is first-rate. Dialoguesare well worded.

Emraan breathes fire in a role that fits him like a glove. He looks dashing and performs his scenes with maturity. He has been cast in a role that the masses love to see him in.

Shineys performance can be best described in one word – excellent. This newcomer has screen presence, delivers the right expressions and has a flawless dialogue delivery.

Kangana looks very glamorous and acts ably.

A must see!!
