I normally keep off Hindi movies these days, and read occasional reviews of movies, just in case not to miss a good one. So, when I read about ''Gangster'', I was surprised with a lot of positive reviews, and went on to see the movie.

I went in with a lot of expectations, and I should say the movie fell short of my expectations. The movie does have its good(infact, brilliant) moments though. With a tight script, the movie should have been very entertaining, and gripping, but there are some glaring defects, which pull the movie down to normalcy.

One of the major let downs in the movie is the dialogues. They are so bookish, and in most of the places, you have obligatory dialogues, which the audience easily guess. It is frustrating to have such scenes along with other brilliant scenes. Apart from the dialogues, the other let down is Emran Hashmi. With due respect, he does look like he is trying his best, but it is not enough. The casting team have come up with wonderful casting decisions when it comes to the female protagonist, and the male lead, but guess they had budget constraints and compromised on the second lead.

For all the flaws that I have listed above, the movie has its moments too. Shiney Ahuja is turning out to be a great performer, and I immensely enjoyed his performance. The heroine Kangana was equally good too. The background score was simply amazing. Good songs, nice locales(the penthouse of Emran was wonderful), and good direction, make this movie watchable.

Towards the end, the basic theme of the movie(trust and betrayal) comes out effectively, and the director has to be given due credit. This inspite of a very dramatic, and improbable scene with very bad dialogues between Kangana and Emran. I just could not stand the scene.

We can see good potential in the writer and director, and he should only improve from here. Hopefully, he should come up with movies that live up to the promise that this movie makes.
