Anurag Kashyap has previously given movies like 'Black Friday', 'Dev D' and the 'The Girl In Yellow Boots' and boy can he make movies based on dark themes. Certainly yes. 'Gangs of Wasseypur ' is a magnificent crime movie in the backdrop of coal mafia rivalry of Eastern India. The plot of revenge and hatrate is well crafted. There are no such so called big stars except Manoj Bajpayee yet others like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Piyush Mishra give the performance of a lifetime, though Manoj Bajpayee overshadowed all with his quintessential performance. The ladies like Richa Chadda , Reema Sen and Humesh Quereshi ably match their male counterparts.
The music by Sneha Khanwalker is so so. The background score by G.V.Prakash Kumar is ok. Rajeev Rai cinematography deserves special mention. The film was shown in the Cannes Films Festival with rave reviews . The real soul behind the film is however Anurag Kashyap who has once again been able to gift the audience a great movie. Perhaps the only drawback of the film is too much emphasis on violence. Indeed too much violence is shown in the movie which could have been avoided. However, the movie is a must watch for Anurag Kashyap fans and lovers of dark cinema.
