If you are a History buff, it is certain that you will love this place. It is not as extravagant as some of the museums but with a lack of too many options nearby I thought to just give it a try and yes I was not disappointed.
This place is not very far from the Madurai Meenakshi Temple(3-4 kms), and its pretty well known, so every taxi and rickshaw driver knows this place. The place looked like a palace, and after I inquired with my guide he told me that it was indeed one built in the 17th century.
The Museum houses a good number of artifacts that comes from India's Independence struggle era, from letters, old newspaper clippings. official notifications, photographs, personal belongings of freedom fighters(even blood stained clothes) etc. Kind of makes you nostalgic and awestruck at the same time. I was amazed when the guide told me that the blood stained cloth is actually the one Gandhi wore when he was assassinated.
Close to it is a small library dedicated to books and teachings of Gandhi, you might find a lot of old books of interest, journals from the Independence era and some diaries of freedom fighters based in Tamil Nadu. You can also buy copies of those books, posters and replica of artifcats from the library.A small Government museum nearby houses the artifacts from the old palace.
Bookings are not required, cameras are only allowed at an additional fee. Only problem is the food around the are if you get hungry, the local vendors make really spicy which troubles you the next day during your morning rituals:P
