The G7 complex is an eternal favourite of movie goers in Bombay. The first theatre in the complex is Gaiety, where the latest films are screened on a priority basis.
Gaiety is a big 800 seater theatre, in sharp contrast to the mini & micro theatres sprouting everywhere. It is located in Bandra off S.V road. The booking counters are well marked with separate counters for current and advance booking. The tickets are reasonably priced at Rs. 50/- and Rs. 35/-. When 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' was released in select theatres, the managers of Gaiety did not screen the film because the distributors asked them to hike up the rates. When the film was finally released in Gaiety, the rates were normal. Kudos to them for caring about the paying public.
The theatre is comfortable though the seats are small with not enough leg room. The acoustics are good. The crowd mostly comprises of college going people from nearby colleges. The snacks in the cafeteria are reasonably priced & the samosa's are a big rage. The balcony section in located on the 3rd floor of the building and there is no lift for the public.
Gaiety is ruled by black marketeers who are the same people behind the ticket counter. As soon as one approaches the theatre, blackers swoon on you with a 'Current Show 80 Rupiya' grin. Gender equality is catching up and one can see a couple of women blackers as well.
Overall, Gaiety is not as comfortable as the new Cine line theatres, however it makes for a great movie experience with a large crowd, tasty snacks & tickets in black.
