Front loading vs Top Loading

Ok.I have never used front loading washing machines, so my comments here are definately skewed in favour of top loading machines. But yes, definately when I had to buy my washing machine, I did look at the pros and cons of both the machines.

I have graduated from washing clothes with hands to using semi automatic machines to fully automatic machines.so kind of know the problems of each type of washings.

Now to the comparison bet front and top loaded machines.

  1. Top loading occupy less space as compared to front loading machines.

  2. In top loading machines it is possible to tweek the wash/rinse/spin timings.

Before I start my weekly washing programme, I classify my clothes under these categories.white and light colored normal and delicate, dark colored delicate, dark colored normal and heavy, light colored heavy. Where delicate are generally very soft clothes, and heavy are Jeans, bedsheets etc.

Washing delicate clothes do not need me to run the full washing cycle. Also if the day is sunny I prefer not to spin my clothes for the full cycle.firstly coz I can complete washing faster and secondly I would prefer to see my clothes dry under sun(Its healthy and economical). Such tweeks are not possible in Front load.

  1. Once you have started washing and find out that u need to wash another shirt of yours.in top loading you can, without disturbing the current wash cycle, just open the door and throw in your shirt.this kind of luxury is not possible in front loading models.

  2. The biggest myth that people have is that top loading machines tear clothes. Actually clothes get torn when you overload the machine or when there is less water. Also if you mix heavy and delicate clothes, the delicate clothes suffer. Another culprit is the buttons of jeans and hooks of blouses. Make sure when you are washing such clothes, you underload the machine. Trust me whenever I break this rule, almost always I end up having atleast some piece of cloth torn. Otherwise I have been using washing machines(semi and now fully) for over 10 yrs now and no clothes get torn.

  3. Top loading machines are much cheaper and much lighter than front loading ones.

  4. Front loading are supposed to give better washing results.not sure about this, but have never found any cloth not getting cleaned up to my levels of satisfaction in my top loading machine.

Note:Top loading machines come with heater option. Generally with heater machines are costlier by 1.5 to 2k. Its worth going for machines with heater. The optimum temprature for enzymes in detergent to work is bet 40 to 45 deg centigrate. You get best results when water used for washin is heated to that level. But avoid overdoing the heater functionality coz firstly superheated water does not give better washing and secondly it shoots up your electricity bill like hell.
