As the name suggests, a channel that’s all about friends and friendship and yes it does live up to its promise of “Bondhu Tomar Jonyo”(Friend only for you). I’ve been listening to radio since it launched several years ago. Yes I mean the whole private FM boom and have tuned off due to the utter trash being dished out by all the stations. Ok that’s a bit harsh, but modern Hindi film songs really don’t constitute music. Its just a small spectrum a vast library of great music that’s been churned out by the Indian Music Industry.
When Friends 91.9 Fm launched on 28th Februrary 2007, I was tuned in before the scheduled 8 am launch time. And yes from the first words uttered by RJ Shekhar that morning, till date I’m glued to this channel, be it at home, in my car or when I hop onto a Yellow Kolkata Taxi.
The music is just the type you want to listen to at any point of the day, as thought the RJs playing the music just realize what kind of mood you are in at any given point of the day. RJ Shekhar with Selaam Kolkata really sets me up for the day and trot into office humming some great music that elevates me. Yes it’s not himesh or sonu or sunidhi. Right now I’m loving “Mehbooba, Mehbooba” on the radio from that epic film Sholay.
Over the last several weeks, it seems Rj Radhica on Ananda Junction has single handedly revived one of my favourite singers Nazia Hussein with Disco Deewane and Boom Boom. Besides that, Radhica’s melodious voice, just keeps me glued to my radio set making me wonder if she herself is a singer.
Gaaner Feriwala, RJ Raja just makes me wonder how many housewives must be dialing into this romantic voice. He just seems like on of those guys who is a hopeless romantic and was that ideal guy every girl would take home to their parents but just didn’t and accepted that marriage proposal that their parents had arranged for them.
RJ Nilanjana, spices up the early evening with her Adda Zone dishing out some racy music setting it up for RJ Purbasha on Kolkata Cocktail. And if you think that I get mesmerized by the likes of these RJ’s, what take the cake are renowned Bengali singers Lopamudra every Thursday night, the eclectic Nachiketa on Saturday nights and Sunday’s fare starting with the legendary Soumitra in the morning followed by Srikanta Acharya and Anjan Dutta in the evening followed by the massively popular Bengali rocker Rupam at night.
On Sundays I like the way RJ Sharmishtha covers various topics and brings in such information and guests that are truly appreciated.
Over the past four weeks I’ve enjoyed the likes of Manna Dey, the popula rock band Chandrabindoo, the acclaimed Ustad Rashid Khan and what can I say about Usha di(Usha Uthup). She just rocked. This is one lady who just gets you on your feet every time she performs.
All I can say is that if you’re not listening to Friends 91.9 FM in Kolkata, your not listening to really good FM.
