Hi, I live in the Frankfurt region and there are a few things I would like to say about the place. If you come to Frankfurt as a tourist, you will be rather disappointed, because the city is not as great as many people imagine. It is an important town for financial things, but not really interesting to see for tourists. But the region around Frankfurt has quite a lot to offer.

Here are a few places that are interesting to see:

In Frankfurt:

The Roemer - it is the main place of interest for tourists, not very big, but very beautiful, a place surrounded by old houses built in a special traditional way with wood and clay. Close by you can find the Dom, an old and nice church, most people wouldn't expect such a church in a place like Frankfurt.

Also close by is the Eiserner Steg, a bridge for pedestrians only, from where you have a nice view on the town and the river Main. From there you can also go on a boat trip to the region.

Senckenberg Museum - a museum for archaeology, very impressive as they have dinosaur and mammoth skelletons there.

Also if you are interested in parks, try the Palmengarten, very nice botanic garden!

If you go to Sachsenhausen, try the cider there (Apfelwein - applewine), the region is very famous for this beverage. Also try some of the other specialities like Sauerkraut, Handkaese mit Musik or the famous Brezels.

Seeing Frankfurt will not take you more than a day! Be careful in the night and in certain regions as Frankfurt is not the safest town at all....especially around the mainstation you shouldn't go for a walk!!!!! And Frankfurt is quite expensive, so check the prices before entering a restaurant or bar...

A little outside is Hoechst, go there on a Tuesday, Friday or Saturday morning and walk over the market, very nice! Also there are many of those typical old houses and a little castle, very nice for a walk! They also have one of the oldest churches of Germany in Hoechst. Hoechst is easily reached by tube! You will need 2 hours to see it.

Outside Frankfurt:

The Rhine - perfect for a boat trip. You shouldn't miss places like Bacharach or Ruedesheim and enjoy seeing the many many castles built at the river. Very very beautiful area and very famous for its wine, the region is full of vineyards which makes it really pictoresque! Take a train from Frankfurt to get there and ask a Frankfurt tourist info to help you plan your trip. You need 1 day for this. You can also stay at one of the castles for the night and have a medieval dinner!

Koenigstein - The ruin of an old castle, very nice to see and also good for children as they have underground tunnels, perfect for hide & seek and also a little scary, even for adult visitors as you don't see anything in them! Also reachable by tube. 3 hours-trip.

Seligenstadt - Medieval little town full of old houses and the second oldest church in Europe. They also have an old monastery with a very beautiful garden. You forget time while walking through Seligenstadt and they have lots of great restaurants and don't forget to try the Eis Kaiser's icecream! Getting there is a little more complicated as there are not many trains to Seligenstadt. Ask at the station how to get there best, you will probably have to take a train to Hanau and then change to a Seligenstadt train. From Frankfurt it will take you an hour to get there or half an hour by car via the A3 highway. Half a day-trip.

Heidelberg - about 1 hour by car from Frankfurt. Also a very old and nice place, very popular for tourists, old streets, an old castle and the Tingstaette on the hill. 1 day trip.
