Whenever I watch a movie I like, I end up wanting to read reviews about it. I like to know if people liked it for the same reasons that I did. I’ve been driving my Ford Ikon for three years now. So, I figured I’d check up on what people had to say. I found all sorts of opinions. I did not

want to be critical of any. What I did want was for people to know that there

is a lot more to this car. It is, in essence, a driver’s car.

I like driving it outside the city. The roads are far better

and I get to speed up more. I like turns best, I speed into them, break and

then once I round that turn, I start accelerating again. I’m telling you

nothing sounds better than the sound of the engine then. It’s hard to explain.

The Ikon handles beautifully on turns. And it has awesome power; the pick up is

too good. It’s very good on inclines as well. It pulls even when I’m climbing a

flyover with my a/c on full. In the city, driving is pretty boring, but I’d

rather be in my car than anywhere else. The a/c is really cold. When I have

company, I keep it on high. Generally when I’m on my own, I keep it on low.

I’ve found that this helps improve the average I get.

In my friends circle everyone except this one guy has his

own car now. But whenever we go for those long drives I make it a point that

I’m taking my car and that I’m driving. Since we dutch for fuel, my friends

don’t mind. On this point I always put them down. Their cars that range from

Scorpios to Swifts hardly give anything. Not that it makes such a big

difference to them, I guess they humor me. I just can’t stand sitting in the

passenger seat. I love to drive and I love driving the ford.

One of my friends is a major car enthusiast. Not that I

don’t like cars, but he’s a lot more into them. When I was making up my mind

three years ago, he test drove the ikon for me. I remember after he got out

from behind the wheel, he said buy it. Recently I took him along to test drive

the new Ikon. We drove both, the petrol version and the diesel. He and I both

liked the diesel a lot. The first thing you notice is the new modified bumper

and headlights. We sat inside and we could hardly hear anything from the

outside. It’s a very comfortable car (If only the seat base was a bit longer)

and has ample luggage room. Once you turn on the ignition you notice the noise

and vibration is reduced. We felt it during the 25 minute drive as well. My dad

used to have a Mahindra soft top two door jeep. When somebody says diesel I

always think of that jeep. It was like a tank, so much noise and vibration. It

was good at clearing oncoming traffic though. But this was something completely

different.

Coming back to my car, I don’t remember it giving me

much trouble. I’ve always gone slowly into ditches. But most of the time I

swerve around them. I drive carefully and don’t try and race in the city—too

many people on the road who just know how to drive. It also saves petrol. I

drive in higher gears but I avoid revving the engine. I’ve booked the 1.4 TDCi

Diesel and added the 13” alloy wheels and rear spoiler. They said the car

delivers 20 kpl under ideal conditions but we don’t live in a ideal world! I’ll

write a detailed performance review once the car is delivered.
