This might well be the Yuppie Book of the Year 2004/5.

Who is Chetan Bhagat?

Chetan is a run of the mill, mediocre ex IIT-Delhi guy who later made it to IIM-A. He got a job, got married. The only useful thing he did in life is write this book Five Point Someone. I am afraid he unlikely to do anything better, after writing this book. He is finished, just coz he wrote the book. Like Amjad Khan who got finished after Sholey.

Why did you buy this book?

The title 5 Point…intrigued me. I was walking through Crossroads, waiting for my Pizza to cook at a shop next to Crossroads…so was just taking a walk here to kill time. The cover intrigued me. I flipped the cover and read who Chetan was. Then I read the reviews of big time papers on the next page. Was impressed. Next I read the Prologue …and got hooked!

The price was just Rs 95/-. Fortunately, after paying the Pizza Hut guy I had a 100 on me, which is very rare. Pizza these days cost Rs 220/-, so much costlier than 5 Point Someone and so much useless.

So next kya huvaaa?

Stupid, I bought this book. Worse, I read the book. ,

Now if I was to collate many of my reviews here on Mouthshut, I realized I write far exciting and good than Chetan! God have I wasted my time efforts and money here? If I was smart like Chetan, I could have minted money money money!!!! I have so much more thrilling experiences to write about my life in NDA than Chetan.

Go on!!

Chetan and Alok, both absolutely normal kids, were fated to meet this horrendous psycho Ryan at IIT Delhi. Ryan ensured that they live a screwed up life at IIT Delhi for 4 solid years. One should have died coz he attempted suicide, but lives to this day. Crazies never die, thanks to Ryan.

God my friends Ceasar, me, whacko Blackie, DV and a dozen more were way too lunatic in NDA and than these three.

No wonder I could empathize with these lunatics from IIT Delhi at ONCE!!!!!

Like Ryan , two of my Navy lunatics are Rear Admirals today in the Indian Navy! I am sure Ryan is way way on top in real life today. And Chetan and Alok a step down. But way way on the top.

So what’s special about this book?

Whacko Chetan says “This book is a work of fiction….” Bullshit. It is fictionalized based on true incidents that actually happened at IIT Delhi when he was there. He just collated different people, students and incidents and wrote this book.

Believe me I know a few phenomenal lunatics from IIT Bombay. One got thrown out for doing grass (charas/ganja), joined NDA with us. NDA=National Defence Academy. He was an Anglo, Baptista…..he passed out of NDA as the greatest intellectual of all times in the fauji Academy.

So what else is there in the book?

Ryan, he was the born LEADER. He was the a thinker, an innovator, the genius. Much like my two friends who are Rear Admirals.

Chetan and Alok got mesmerized by Ryan’s odd ways. He was not a normal run of the mill guy. He had that extra something….and poor Alok and Chetan got hypnotized by Ryan. What they did not know was that Ryan would eventually nearly ruin their IIT Academic grades.

They came pretty close getting kicked off the campus.

Oh my God!

But in the long run if Chetan and Alok come good in life they have Ryan to thank them. He was real real street smart.

Why?

Coz Ryan was an original thinker. He had guts, he had a flair for discovering the new world, he had the vision to go beyond what the IIT syllabus and Professors had to teach them. Ryan was a born entrepreneur, potential Noble Prizewinner. He was a thinker.

Alok? What was he all about?

Alok figured that getting into IIT was the be all and end all of life. Just getting good grades and passing out, getting a great job and a future was enough. Instead he jumped off the roof of an IIT campus building, all coz of some crazy ideas of Ryan…luckily he survived Chetan had no vision of life for himself at all. He was horny.

Horny?

Like all students are. He had a great time frolicking with the daughter of the Professor. And he went all the way. But in the bargain they all screwed up their GPA’s.

Hmmmm…… what else?

Go read this book. It’s a must read for all. Deep down inside this book is the secret of making it in life in the long term, no matter what the odds.

The secret lesson to be learnt is this:

A linear, logical way of thinking and subsequent actions is a sure formula for mediocricity and failure.
