Story:

After reading Chetan Bhagat’s fantastic book One Night @ The Call Center I decided to read Five Point Someone. I had expected Five Point Someone to be as nice as Call Center but I was wrong. The reason is Five Point Someone is bit boring at times. But naturally, it would be as it was Chetan Bhagat’s first book so his writing skills at that time would not had been 100% perfect.

The Main Characters of the Story:

1.HARI: The narrator of the story. He is slightly fat and unattractive. He gets scared off during vivas. He likes to eat paranthas and watch movies and was a ranker in school. The problem with him is he likes to do whatever Ryan wants to do.

2.RYAN: Ryan is a cool-dude! He has a perfect and well-built body and has a good posture(as compared to Hari!). He hates studying (or mugging as the author says in the book) and tries to find solutions to lessen his mugging. And he always fails. His parents live in US and sends me letters and cheques, at least once a week but he never replies to them but though keeps those letters neatly!! He is always upto experimenting something.

3.ALOK: Alok is also somewhat like Hari-fat and unattractive. He has a lot of problems in life. When he was in Std 7, his father became paralysed. His mother then worked hard so that she can feed Alok and his elder sis. Since std 7, he never went out of his house after coming home from school and helps his father because of which he did no exercise and very little fat and became fat! He had joined IIT so that he can get a nice job and high salary so that he can support his family and arrange for her sister’s marriage. He was a nerd in school and was trying hard to fare well in IIT.

The story: Hari, Ryan and Alok are the first-year students in IIT-Delhi. The three becomes nice friends. The story then shows how life can go out of way if we do not think straight. Hari, the narrator then also falls in love with Neha, the daughter of Prof.Cherian (the prof in IIT). The story also shows the life of trio during their stay in IIT. The story shows some interesting incidents occurring in the life of the trio and what hardships they have to suffer. In the end, the story shows the convocation day at IIT and what happens to each of the three after leaving IIT.

I had read this book in Shivaji Park’s Crossword Corner. I decided that everyday I would read 60 days of the book. On day 1, I read around 65 pgs and found the book okay. On Day 2, I read till around 130 and I found the book a bit good. On Day 3, I read the whole remaining book, from Pg 131 to Pg 275 as I started getting interest in the book!

The characters are portrayed very well and Chetan’s describes everything properly and in a funny way! As the story of the book moved forward, it became more and more interesting. And the kind-hearted Chetan also gives little space for Alok, Ryan and Neha to describe whatever is there in their mind!

But there are some flaws in this book too. In the whole book, from Pg1 to Pg 275, nothing has been shown about Hari’s parents. The reader does not even come to know whether Hari’s parents are dead or alive. Secondly, what I didn’t liked was the portion where Prof.Cherian give a great touching speech on Convocation Day and the readers then come to know that it was all Hari’s dream! Really, it irritated me!

I liked the following portions of the book very much:

  1. When Hari enters Neha’s room to wish her a happy birthday at night and Ryan insults Prof.Cherian

  2. When Ryan explains his C2D (Cooperate to Dominate) Theory in front of Hari, Alok, a surd and Anurag.

  3. When Hari goes for attending Prof.Cherian’s viva test in a drunken state!!

  4. All the six chapters of ‘The Longest Day of My Life’ (it was excellent and nail-biting!)

  5. When Prof.Cherian discovers Samir’s letter (Samir was Prof Cherian’s son)

  6. When Hari takes Neha to the insti roof

On the whole, Five Point Someone is a nice, well-written book with a nice humorous story. I suggest you that if you have not read any of Chetan Bhagat’s books and are planning to read, then please read this book first and One Night @ The Call Center afterwards. Mr. Chetan, I am eagerly waiting for your third book!!
