"Five point someone" is a book which has brought our attention to pathetic situation of IIT students to the fore.People generally think that if someone is in IIT or even selected in IIT, his life is a bliss, but what is absolute truth is widely shown in this book. These students are subjected to endless mugging of notes and books completely neglecting the practical aspect of things. If someone tries to put up the issues, he is ignored by faculty except some similar people who may have experienced similar problems inĀ the past.In short, faculty there tries to impose their style of studies on the students which is not only non practical, but also completely boring.
The story is woven around three IIT students , all of them are from different backgrounds, but strung together due to impending circumstances. One is from lower middle class, who is burdened with getting good grades so that he brings financial prosperity to family by landing a good job, other is from completely different background who has no dearth of money, third one is in between set of circumstances, but has disturbed family background.
The story marches ahead with all the study years at IIT, affair of one of the friend with a professor's daughter and many misadventures of the trio including sneaking into girl's bedroom through pipe or stealing examination papers from Professor's office.
Bad grades leads to attemped suicide by one of the friends thus highlighting the situation and then leading to some reform in projects or studies.Later on, the so called 'slowest" friend lands a dream job and the 'handsomest and brightest" ventures into business not much linked with IIT's so called degree which leads to bliss.
Chetan Bhagat , a former IITian has penned the story and its soon will be converted into a movie , Deepika Padukone is rumored to be playing female lead.
Its a time pass book, but is useful in the way that it at least highlights style of study at IITs which have become monotonous and tiring and needs reform.
Thanks for reading my review.
