We all know that Love is an indescribable, unfathomable, unparalled and an unbelievable feeling! It is difficult to define love and equally difficult is shortlisting five songs that I would like to sing for my beloved!

Especially, when I know I exist in the same world where musical and lyrical legends have left a legacy behind. Legends who have created masterpieces and made this task simply impossible.

In the next few paragraphs, I seek to pay a tribute to the spirit of love and the magic of love songs that help us rediscover romance time and again, A setting sun, a rising storm, a walk down the beach hand in hand, the bittersweet pain of love…imagine it all devoid from the magical touch of the masters of sound, notes, lyrics and music….

Song 1

How often have you wished that you soaked in every glorious sunrise and sunset with your beloved…? How often have you prayed that you live every breathing moment of the day, as one heart and soul with your beloved?

As the day ends, how often do you run away to find yourself unwinding and then drowning in the eyes of your lover and waking up to a brand new day through each other’s mind’s eye.

All the days and nights when the thought of your lover surrounds you like the perfume of rain soaked petals, don’t you feel like stopping the time from slipping away? Haven’t you ever closed your eyes and hummed…Kisi din aisa bhi to ho raat ki subah hi na ho… Raat ke baad bhi raat ho…

Have you ever wondered?

Aisa ho to kaisa hoga

Aap ho paas to din dhale

Paas ho aap to din chale…

This not so popular RD-Gulzar masterpiece is from the film Ratnadeep. Everything about this song is so romantic. Be it the tune, the lyrics or the carefree way in which Asha Bhosle has sung it. Special mention to the rawness with which she has sung it.

Perfect voice and perfect lyrics helped pancham to score yet another gem.

Sitar, flute, violin & Asha.all go in tandem to make this excellent composition a jewel.

Go and listen to this song, think of you beloved and imagine, Aisa ho to kaisa hoga…

Song 2

Young girls of marriageable age, who have seen the movie Ghar, would agree with me on this!

Haven’t you ever felt like placing photographs of your beloved on a glass table, ekdum Rekha ishtyle and singing Tere bina jiya jaaye na…? Well, I would want to do that some day!

Waiting for your beloved is a painfully boring exercise but this is the most interesting ‘waiting’ song that I have heard and seen.

Whenever I listen to this song, my heart overflows with love.

I bet girls would agree that there is something mysterious about this song. Whenever it plays, you ‘feel’ as beautiful, vibrant and sensuous as Rekha. All the critics who felt Lata Mangeshkar couldn’t sound sensuous, must’ve bitten their tongues on listening to this song. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in this song has the same effect on you, as the chilly winter nights have on your skin!

I have just one word for this RD-Gulzar classic, MAGICAL!

So, next time you have a bunch of snaps, you know exactly what to do with them

Song 3

Nothing expresses the intense love of a girl, as marvelously as my next love song. This song has lyrics that are beyond compare, by my favourite lyricist Rajinder Krishan. So simple yet so deeply meaningful. I am referring to, Sharm aati hai magar… from Padosan.

Aap se rooth ke hum jitna jiye, khaak jiye

kai iljaam liye, aur kai iljaam diye

aaj ke baad magar, kuchh bhi naa kehna hoga

ab hume aap ke pehloon mein hi rehna hoga

sharm aati hai magar…

In the film Padosan, Bratty Saira Banu mellows down and realizes that she is in love with Sunil Dutt therefore this dulcet song has mixed emotions of that of the heroine’s confession of love and her apologies for being insensitive with the hero so far.

This is an ultimate ‘confession of love’ song for me.

Song 4

This one is one of Lata Mangeshkar’s favourite too! This rare gem is yet another divine gift to the music lovers from Pancham da.

Right from the first guitar piece to the last bicycle bell sound(!), Tere liye palkon ki jhaalar bunoon… from Harjaaee is an incredible love song.

Panchamda known for his experimentation with new instruments, has used a bicycle bell in the interlude of this song.

This song gives me goose bums every time I listen to it.

The lyrics are simple and meaningful but what makes the song ultra special is the flawless way in which Lata Mangeshkar has rendered it and the recording quality of the song. The sound quality actually conveys that Panchamda was indeed ahead of time.

Song 5

Now comes the song that takes you to a dream world. Lingering flute piece, dreamy chorus and Lata Mangeshkar’s honey-dewed voice makes this song special for a music lover. This melody from the film Zameen Aasmaan, is one of the nightingale’s best renditions in the 80s.

Aisa sama na hota…. Brings an instant smile on my face.

I haven’t yet seen this Sanjay Dutt-Anita Raj starrer movie but since the time I have heard this song, it has stayed with me.

Anjaan’s lyrics are simple yet superb.

Last but not the least, all the songs that I have mentioned in this review are composed by my favourite Panchamda. I did not make any conscious efforts in shortlisting Panchamda’s songs. It just happened. Coincidentally, today is his birth anniversary and I submit this review as a tribute to this phenomenal composer. Honestly, life wouldn’t have been the same without Panchamda’s song! Panchamda ki jai ho!
