Have you been loved?

If it is important enough to you, it will go wrong. Sooner  or later there will be a misunderstanding. You are, so you will disagree.  You will stamp your foot and damage those expensive heels. He will kick the  nearest thing available and mutter under his breath. You will walk off in a  huff, determined that you will never talk to him again.

Some time will pass. And you will catch yourself singing  something soulfully and thinking of a friend. Remember all the sweet things he  did for you, without your asking or reminding? Remember the unexpected gifts –  how did he know you’d always wanted that? And remember finally, the bond of  friendship?

“But, but, but Pipes up the little voice of the  ego. “I’m so hurt….” It whines. And you go back to being stubborn. To cut a long story short, you putter around morosely,  missing your love, knowing he/ she is missing you more and finally make up your  mind. This is childish – it has gone on for long enough. Surely you can  talk like adults?  You know one message  is all it will take. So what will that sweet message be?

Rootha   hai to manaa lenge:(from Jwar Bhata, sung by Lata) Pictured on   delicate darling Saira Bano and the ultimate romantic hero of the times –   Dharmendra. It instantly sets the mood as playful, mischievous and yet   affectionate.

Rooth   na jaana tum se kahoon to:(from 1942, a love story, sung by Kumar   Sanu) For various reasons cited in a previous review, this movie has been   a favorite of mine. This is another playful song singing of a loving heart   who will bear all your sitams – who can resist being loved so   sweetly?                                                          I love the part of the song   that compares love to a vast river and he who braves its waves will find   the kinara.

Roothe   Roothe piya:(from Kora Kagaz, again by Lata) – A worried and a slightly   sad song that captures the heart of a girl’s confusion. Till he tells   me what it is, how shall I ever know?

O   mere sona re sona:(from Teesri Manzil, sung by Asha Bhonsle) Though   it doesn’t exactly feature the word roothns, this song is the ultimate on   the art of roothna manana. It sweetly confesses that it took you a little   longer to know better but now you are here and you can’t imagine a life   without him/her in it.

Rooth   ke hamse kahin:(from Jo Jeeta wohi Sikandar, sung by Jatin). Though   originally not set in a romantic situation, it mirrors your feelings   perfectly.

Love the part of this song that  says:

Baaton, kabhi hathon se bhi  maara hai tumhe

Sada yahi keh ki hi pukara hai  tumhe

Kya kar loge mera jo bigad  jaoge tum

Ye na socha tha kabhi itne yaad  aoge tum

Why is it that you realize the  importance of a person only when they walk away? Why is that you take them for  granted as you do everything they do and feel for you? Why is it that you  feel  this person will always be around  no matter how much you hurt them, will let you get away with anything just  because you are loved and secure in it?

One day it will  finally be too late.Maybe it is already.

In the end,

There are so many reasons

For not doing things

For not giving enough

For holding back

For not loving, not accepting

For playing it safe

For not being there, letting go,

…walking away

but none of them

are really good enough

Its not about bodies, shapes,  complexions and sizes

You may find a thousand friends

And yet keep searching, missing

That one loving heart who accepted  you as you were

That voice which haunted your  dreams

that smile you knew would always  welcome you

that step you knew matched yours

that gaze which watched over you  as you slept unaware

pride, hurt, vanity, ego, doubt,  suspicion – are fickle friends

You could end up living half a  life

Feeling half a person

Walking alone down that dark road

While people turned and pointed

And said in hushed whispers “he  has been loved
