There has been quite a large number of hindi films which have been hits and we have been wondering WHY!!!!!???On the other hand there are classics like Silsila, Lamhe, Andaz apna apna which did not do too well when they were released but are considered great films today.Coming back to films which were hits but do not deserve to be so the following are my top 5 choice:
1)KAL HO NA HO-Perhaps the worst film I have seen in years.No script(Anand's story twisted to an NRI friendly one), HAMMING(Shahrukh hams big time), the only saving factor of the film are the sincere performances of Preity and Saif.Jaya bachchan is completely misfit in the role of a christan mother to preity.In fact the best scene of the film is when Shahrukh dies.The worst scene-Jaya bachchan waiting with her children for the arrival of angel.
2)KABHIE KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM-This one's really bad.With 'its all about loving your parents' tagline it has no love for either the script or performances.The hero and his brother spend half of the film crying.The film is too long, has no novelty and wastes actors like Amitabh and Jaya and of course KAJOL(What a waste!!!!).
3)GADAR-The biggest hit in the history of Indian cinema(That is how they promoted when the film was a hit) is about a story going nowhere, mindless violence and inexplicable situations and characters.The only redeeming factor is Sunny but even he is made to mouth dialogues which are meaningless and unnecessary.No proper script, sceenplay in place the second half is not better than a B grade action flick.
4)HERO-One of the longest climaxes in the history of hindi flims it went on to be the biggest hit of the year.A totally wooden performance by Jackie(Sorry wood has more expressions), Sanjeev Kumar and the music by Laxmi-Pyare were the saving graces.It was the time of Subhash Ghai's films with loud characters, louder climaxes and black and white characters.(Grey was not in).The film was too long, veryyyy loud(in fact todays audience will not be able to sit through the film), hamming by most actors(Shakti Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor competed to win the 'best hammer' award) it certainly does not deserve to be a hit.
5)SOLDIER-The only good thing about the best was the music.Otherwise a very ordianry film about a wronged MAA(it used to work in the 70's not 90's) and how her son takes revenge of her husbands murder.Bobby Deol refuses to go beyong 3 expressions throughout the movie.Preity looks happier as she only has to dance in the movie.(In fact this movie should get the award for the most insignificant role for the lead actress).Farida Jalal has a better role than Preity!!!!!!!Rakhee hams as she has countless times earlier in Ram lakhan, Karan Arjun, Baazigar etc.Hackneyed plot, loud performances, bad script, it is really surprising that it was a hit.
Note:It may seem that I am an enemy of Karan Johar but nothing of that sort.In fact I enjoyed Kuch kuch hota hai.
