The Best of Times...

Hey people! Say hello as I am back in this forum after a long hiatus and believe me it feels good!

and above all, nothing like reviewing an obscure topic for which no reviews have been written so far.

But I do have some apprehensions with this review as STYX is not one of my favourite bands. and this is not on the basis of one or two songs but after listening to their complete  collection.

but Hey that should not discourage you to lend your ears to this critically acclaimed rock band which apparently is the only band to have gone platinum three times in a row.

I started listening to this band with their concept album called'Paradise Theater'. I can say this is one of their genuine progressive rock efforts & probably the best till now. After that, I checked out Crystallball, STYX II, Serpent is rising, Chronicles etc. but found them to be very cliched typical hard-rock cuts except for one or two songs here & there.

Five of their best would be -:

  1. Best of Times:

Taken from paradise theater, this is way ahead of any of their compositions may I say Magnum opus.

Paradise theater is the poignant tale of theater artistes after the movies wiped  them off from the entertainment scene. Excellent song with powerful harmonies & an extremely melodious guitar solo.

  1. Come Sail Away:

This is one of those songs which start off as ballad but progresses into hard rock towards the end.

In this case the song begins with vocals accompanied by soft piano till it gets hijacked by the distorted guitar noise & heavy percussions.

  1. CrystallBall:

I like the guitar interludes in this composition. One cant rule out a touch of symphonic-prog rock with harmonies.

4.  Babe

Electronic intro followed by a short ballad before the song breaks into a quintessential hard rock.

  1. A Day

Not a typical STYX song. No distortion no shouting and yelling just a lovely haunting melody with a heavy dose of psychedelia.

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead dudes. take a dip in this mythical river but make sure you submerge your heels too.
