Alka's Best Of The 90s

Alka Yagnik dominated playback singing in the 90s. Choosing her five best songs is not an easy thing because she has given so many hits since she started. There is something with her voice which I really like. I composed a few songs keeping Alka Yagnik in mind. There are certain songs only Alka Yagnik can sing. She improved over the years and proved that she can sing numerous types of songs.

After the superhit ?Ek Do Teen? in Tezaab, she started getting more offers. However at the start of the 90s, she faced some tough competition from Anuradha Paudwal and Kavita Krishnamurthy. But then she took the lead in the mid 90s. She likes working with all the music directors but she has a preference for Nadeem-Shravan, Anu Malik and A.R. Rahman.

Everyone knows her songs very well but I have chosen songs which some of you might have forgotten. Alka does not need a?solo? to prove her singing abilities. Even when she sings in duets, she does a good job.

Lyrics are included but I haven?t translated them because I find them more beautiful in Hindi. The list is not in order of preference

Raah Mein Unse Mulaqat Ho Gayi? Vijaypath(1994)

Music by Anu Malik. Lyrics by Zameer Kazmi

Raah mein unse mulaqat ho gayi

Raah mein unse mulaqat ho gayi

Jis se Darte The Wahi Baat ho gayi

One of the finest songs of the 90s. This song is almost perfect. Kumar Sanu accompanies her in this song. It is picturized on Ajay Devgan and Tabu. The song carries the piano, the guitar and soft instruments. It is about how they fell in love. It is rich in poetry as well. If you like romantic songs, well, this one is for you then!

Zubaan Khamosh Hoti Hai - Main Khiladi Tu Anari(1994)

Music by Anu Malik. Lyrics by Rani Malik

Zubaan khaamosh hoti hai, nazar se kaam hota hai

Isi pal ka zamaane mein mohabbat naam hota hai

Dekho dekho dekho mujhe pyaar ho gaya

Jaane kab kaise ikraar ho gaya

Yeh voh ehsaas hai jisko na lafzon ki zaroorat hai

Jisse paakar lage saara zamaana khoobsurat hai

Zamaana khoobsurat hai

Remember this song? Melody at its best here. Again Alka is accompanied by Kumar Sanu but she does better than the latter. The way Alka sings this one is really amazing. Read the lyrics and you will know the deepness of this song. Indian melody expresses the romantic moods much better. Typical 90s song but the first ?Antra? sung by Alka was really nice. If I had to rate her on this song, it?s 10/10 for me. Who can beat 10/10?

Taal Se Taal? Taal(1999)

Music by A.R Rahman. Lyrics by Anand Bakshi

Saawan ne aaj to mujhko bhigo diya,

Hay meri laaj ne mujhko dubo diya

Aisi lagi chadi,

Sochu mai.n yeh khadi

Kuch mai.n ne kho diya

Kya mai.n ne kho diya

Chup kyo hai bol tu

Sang mere dol tu

Meri chaal se chaal mila

Maestro Rahman composed a track which is simply out-of-this world. The orchestration of this song is one of the best from him. Anand Bakshi's lyrics added more to Alka?s voice in this one. The way she pronounces ?Taal Se Taal Mila? is wonderful. She reaches the right note on this one and then she sings the lower notes. Her voice flows with the music. Rahman?s music is first class here. No comparison to any other songs.

Baadalon Mein Chhup Raha- Phir Teri Kahaani Yaad Aayi(1993)

Music by Anu Malik. Lyrics by Qateel Shafai

Baadalon mein chhup raha hai chaand kyoon

Apne husn ki zaya se poochh lo

Chaandni padi hui hai maand kyoon

Apne hi kisi ada se poochh lo

Meri hasraton pe bekhudi si chhaa gayi

Tumko dekhkar nigaah ladkhadaa gayi

A question- answer(sawaal-jawaab) song. These types of songs are very common but difficult to compose. However, this one is so good. The song is light and Kumar Sanu sings with her. Alka is putting the questions in such a simple girlish way and she also gives interesting answers in the song. The mood of the song is: we should be happy and merry. No stress at all! Songs can be simple but yet pleasing to the ears. Alka also performs so at ease.

Gazab Ka Hai Din? Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak(1988)

Music by Anand-Milind. Lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri

Gazab ka hai din socho zara

Yeh diiwaanapan dekho zara

Tum to akele ham bhii akele

Mazaa aa rahaa hai

Qasam se

Innocence is in her voice. The music is simple again. The guitar pieces make this one so pleasing. It is picturized on Aamir Khan and young Juhi Chawla. The lyrics are straight from the heart. She sounds exactly like a young girl who just discovered love and she is so happy about it. She found a new world of happiness and she is expressing herself without any prejudice. Can you express this in singing? Well Alka Yagnik did. I should mention that all the songs from this movie by her were very good.

Alka Yagnik is now singing for the big banners but I believe that most music directors have given full justice to her voice. She has plenty more to offer to the audience. I like her 90s songs more but they are many more good songs of her. I also wanted to show that a song doesn?t need to be complex. Simple songs brings more joy to the ears and with a sweet voice like Alka, she makes the simple songs more listenable.
