The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Here goes. I've been dying to write about this since kingdom come. About which singers sound good - or not - together, I mean. Sometimes music directors, with their busy schedules, don't really find time to consider the importance of looking for the right singers - and the right pair. Out here I'm going to write about jodis comprising one person of each gender, but for the record KK and Shaan sound quite good together.

The Good:

  1. KK and Alisha Chinai - Their temperaments go together. What with his intensity and her allure, this combination is fiery and sublime. Go Balle Balle(Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa).

  2. KK and Gayatri Iyer - This is probably a combo no one's heard of. Unconventional though it is, one can hear the compatibility between the two in their powerful voices. Shikdum - the bedroom mix(Dhoom).

  3. KK and Vasundhara Das - This is a case of  opposites attracting. Vasundhara is husky while KK is smooth. Both are enhsiastic, though, and it shows. Chale Jaise Havaaein(Main Hoon Na).

  4. KK and Sunidhi Chauhan - Also a combination that makes sparks fly. Sunidhi's fruity quality complements KK's low intense notes. Soniye - Mix and Match Remix (Ek Ajnabee).

  5. Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal - Shrill Shreya, and soft Shaan. These two go together because of their utter sweetness and lack of energy. One almost forgets it, in fact, as this combo is very gentle on the ears. Naam Adaa Likhna(.Yahaan).

  6. KK and Hema Sardesai - After all, who can forget the coffee? Would it ever have been so simple if these two hadn't sounded like they'd been drinking it together all their lives? This is on the list for the easy familiarity with which they sing together. Tere Sang Ek Simple Si Coffee(Zameen).

The Bad:

  1. KK and Alka Yagnik - Gosh, I feel so sorry for KK sometimes - having to tone down the power in his voice to supplement her lack of it. Ye Fizaaein(Main Hoon Na).

  2. KK and Shreya Ghoshal - Shreya is way too shrill and squeaky for KK. Good that he just goes ahead and does his own thing, and she plays second fiddle. Teri Yaadon Mein - Ethereal Mix(The Killer).

  3. Shaan and Alisha Chinai - Poor Shaan. I suppose he'd get intimidated by Alisha, and yearn for Shreya all the time. No example for this one - I just put it in because I was shocked at the very idea.

The Ugly:

  1. Kunal Ganjawala and Alisha Chinai - Just plain OUCH! English lyrics in the middle of I Love You For What You Are(Aap Ki Khaatir): the rest is KK.

  2. Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan - No, no sparks flying here. Gustakh Dil Tere Liye(Dil Maange More).

  3. Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinai - Sonu is far too tame for her. Rang Rang Mein(Bollywood Hollywood)

Oh well, that's done. I must say that the pleasure of listening to the compatible ones together far outweighs the consternation of hearing the ones who sound utterly uncomfortable with one another. Now I wonder if anyone would tell me their own opinion?
