For the little hearts
Jun 07, 2006 02:16 AM 10920 Views

As a kid I have been blessed to have a chance to watch numerous children’s English movies. The ones I have loved the most have been listed below.

Mary Poppins (1964)-

Two naughty children of a banker loose their granny due to her frustration over them. In comes their new care taker nanny, Mary Poppins (played by Julie Andrews) who matches with the qualifications of the kids and not the father. As she magically helps the children to explore the world around them and steals their hearts, the father totally disapproves to her new methods and tries to win back his children.

Secret Garden (1993)-

An arrogant young British girl (Kate Maberly), born and brought up in India looses her negligent eventually in an earthquake. She returns to her homeland to live in her uncle’s castle where she’s again forgotten due to the distant attitude of her uncle remorsing over the great lose of his beautiful wife 10 years ago. To occupy her loneliness she decides to explore the estate revealing an ever hidden garden with the help of a servant boy.

Matilda( 1996)-

An intelligent and bright girl, Matilda (Mara Wilson) born to an ignorant family is all set to gain knowledge and attend school. Her least bothered parents admit her to a school run by a horrid principle Miss.Trunchbull. Matilda befriends a heartwarming teacher, Miss Honey who realizes her student’s talents and turns much amazed to see Matilda’s magical powers.

Madeline( 1998)-

Madeline is a redheaded orphaned girl (Hatty Jones) studying in a school in Paris. Being a mischievous kid Madeline is always into trouble but is also equally smart in sorting out problems, and her school mistress, Miss Clavel is not too approving of her. The biggest problem comes when Lord Covington decides to sell Madeline’s school and Madeline is going to do anything to stop it.

Stuart Little(1999)-

The ‘Littles’ decide to adopt a new member to their family when their son George insists to have a younger brother than an elder one. To his surprise his parents bring back home a cute little mouse named Stuart to accompany as his little bro. George is all disappointed and their family pet cat, Snowbell is trying hard enough to get rid of his new master. In spite of all these difficulties Stuart showers all his love and compassion to his family and makes them realize that big things can come in small packages.

The above five are my all time favorite children’s movies. I would like to suggest some other movies too which have awakened the child in me.

a) Fly Away Home (1996) – A 14 year old boy helping a goose to find its path back to home.

b) The other side of heaven (2001) –An epic journey of a kid

c) Catch That Kid (2001) –A mission of a set of three friends

d) Aquamarine (2006) –Two 12 year old girls meets a mermaid in a beach pool

All these movies are a must see regardless of the age as there are sure to capture your tender hearts.
