Bollywood's King of Comedy

Hindi/Bollywood cinema had it share of funny men onscreen but few stood out amongst them, almost 500 or so.

1940s saw some, 1950s started to become populated, 1960s saw more and more of funny men, 1970s saw the boom and a special era comedy movie in Indian cinema, 1980s saw newcomers and emergence of black comedy. 1990s Saw just too much comedy that made you pull your hair out and your belly ached by laughing so hard.

Here is my pick of funny guys from Hindi Cinema.

Om Prakash- He was probabaly first Indian actor to fit in almost all the supporting cast for some comic relief in a movie. He epitomised his character for that old funny guy look. The white long beard and bald head. He did some good films in 1940s and 50s but he really came of age in 1975 movie Chupke Chupke, and from then on he was picked for almost all the movies for a comical side to the movie.

Ashok Kumar- Dada Muni was an allrounder, but his speciality was comedy. And he did so with making little kids happy with smile and made grown ups laugh with his upper level jokes. His comic relief in Khatta Meetha, Khubsoorat and Shaukeen were his best.

Amol Palekar- A born comedian, as almost everyone thought and after his runaway hit Gol Maal in 1980 he was true class act in Hindi Movies for comic relief. Before golmaal he made Comed/family movies like Meri Bibi ki shaadi, Daamad, Baaton Baaton Mein, Chooti Si Baat but notheless he was best known for Gol Maal's Ramprasad Dashratprasad Sharma character.

Utpal Dutt- Eventhough He has made more bengali movies and had done almost equally good number of Hindi Films, his early comic act was seen in ''Anand Ashram'' in 1977 but he really came away with Gol Maal along with Amol Palekar, from then on he made movies like Shaukeen, Mera Damad, Lakhon Ki Baat which saw another comedian I will Mention. ''Eeeesssh'' was the phrase when something bad happen to him, every time I hear that phrase in any of the new movies, it reminds me of Utpal Dutt.

Sanjeev Kumar- the Surati(word used for a person from Surat,Gujarat)Haribhai Jariwala or Zariwala, who use to live right in my neighbourhood where I use to live as told by my dad before Sanjeev Moved to bombay in early 60s to pursue acting his serious acting was seen in Aandhi and Trishul, though He also made memorable comedy films, like swaymwar, Nauker co starring Mili or Amitabh Bachan's Wife Jaya, Naya Din Nayi Rat saw him impersonate more the 12 or 13 different characters. Angoor- a comedy of errors movie taken from shakespeare play, Lakhon Ki Baat co starring Farooque Sheikh and Utpal Dutt. His last film profferor Ki padoson was also funny, but sadly his last film and he died young in 1985 the same year when that movie was released.

Devan Verma- he fitted into a comic's shoe right away and needed nothing more than a funny situation to happen in a movie, He was best known for Angoor co starring Sanjeev Kumar, Gol Maal, Kissi Se Na Kehna, and Rang Birangi.

Few others who I can't go into details but definetly deserves praises are:

Asrani- Sholay and Bawarchi

Paresh Rawal- Hera Pheri, Andaz Apna Apna, Awara Pagal Dewanna.

Mehmood-Padosan, Bombay To Goa, Pyar Kiye Jaa, Johar Mehmood in Hongkong.

Kishore Kumar-Half Ticket, Chalti naam Gaadi, Bhardti Ka Naam Dahadi, Jhumroo.

Bhagwan Daas-Jhamela and all the cameo perfomances in Amitabh ''s Films throughout 1970s and 80s.

Kader khan-Coolie No 1, Raja Babu, Aakhen(1993), Baap Numbari Beta Dus Numbari.

Govinda-Raja Babu,Aakhen,Coolie No 1, Hero No.1

Johny Lever- Hatya,Jalwa,Ishq,Dulhe Raja

Laxmikant Berde-Maine Pyaar Kiya and Anari.

Farooque Sheikh-Chasme Buddoor,Peecha Karo, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Mera Damad,Rang Birangi.
