Many of you who know me would consider me to be completely unqualified to write on such a subject. After all how can someone who claims

to not see most of the Hindi movies be qualified to say who’s at the top and who’s not. But friends you forget that the knowledge of Hindi movies and its actors actresses does not only come from watching movies, there are other sources as well like the internet, movie magazines, weekly hearing of the discussions between your sisters and your wife on how the lives and affairs of these demy gods are progressing etc. And last but not the least are the TV programmes that one is forced to watch when one looses an argument with his wife on the choice of channel to be watched.

Equations in 2006

Till just about a year or so back the situation was like this. Priyanka Chopra was at No3 where she had reached in just a few years of starting her career after winning the Miss World title. She has almost everything going for her, good looks, fabulous figure, very good acting skills and a totally professional attitude towards work. Performances in movies like Aitraz are testimony to her acting abilities. It is said that she is the first Indian leading lady to have reached within the first three slots in such a short time. All others past or not so old had taken almost a decade to get there. So much so that even the most glamorous Aiswarya Rai was one spot behind her.

At the No 2 spot was Preity Zinta. She had got there by sheer grit and hard work and some exemplary performances. A lady with an iron determination as was demonstrated by her decision to testify against and underworld without any fear of a reprisal.

And the ruling queen bee of Bollywood was Rani Mukherjee. She is ordinary looking, has no figure to talk about but her natural acting and spontaneous performances clinched it for her. Movies like Bunty Bubli, Black and many others are proof enough if ever any was needed.

Situation Today

However at the end of 2007 and a few months into 2008, the situation has changed drastically. The hits and misses of 2007 have made a lot of difference to the equations.

Spot No 5

Rani Mukherjee has taken a big fall from the top slot to No 5. She never really had any figure or looks and the average success of movies like LCMD which she failed to carry on her own shoulders led to her downfall. Her current rate stands at a measly 1.5 Cr per film. But as we all know her acting talents are any day better that most other girls around, we’re sure she will bounce back sooner than later, maybe as soon as the end of this year. All the best to you Rani.

Spot No 4

Priyanka Chopra has fallen from the No 3 spot to the No 4 spot. She currently commands a rate of about 2-2.5 Cr per film.

Spot No 3

Aiswarya Ria after her marriage has regained some of the lost popularity and after the successes of Dhoom2 and Jodha Akbar has climbed up one spot to No3. She currently commands something in the range of 2.5-3 Cr per film.

Spot No 2

If you ask me there’s nothing to Katrina Kaif. She has no figure, is too huge and horsy, has a chocolate face devoid of any charm and about her acting the lesser said the better. Irrespective of the situation she only has one expression to offer. A classic example of what one can achieve by riding on another stars success. I hope that with after attaining such a position she does learn some acting and looses some weight to at least look presentable prancing around in the movies. She is reported to have signed a deal with Reliance for 2 movies for 12 Cr, making her rate a staggering Rs 6 Cr per movie! But even if the leave this deal aside, industry sources confirm her rate at Rs 3.5 Cr.

Spot No 1

Now there is one deserving lady here. Superlative performance in Jab We Met has catapulted the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor from nowhere to the No 1 slot. Now this is one babe who deserves to be where she is. She has shown in JWM that she has all that it takes to single-handedly carry a movie to be a runaway hit. With all the right carrier moves she has made it to the coveted spot today. She has producers lining up for her and commands a clear rate of Rs 6 Cr per movie! Way to go Lady.

Now about the top 5 heroes of our dream world. In the past as we all know the Khans have ruled the roost. Sharukh, Saif, Aamir, Akshay, Hritik, Salman, Amitabh, have all fought for the top honors. So what are the equations today. Read on, I will tell all.

Spot No 5

Surprise Surprise. Salman Khan sits at the bottom of the table with just about 8-10 Cr a movie. But I think he should be satisfied with being where he is. His body and looks are way past his prime, given the type of lifestyle that he has. His acting was always average I thought. He has already earned enough for scores of generations. Sorry friends, I’m not a Salman fan and these are not my statistics.

Spot No 4

Unfortunately Hritic Roshan is still at No 4 slot, though I would have liked to see him a notch higher. He has carried even stupid movies like Dhoom 2 only on his superlative moves, body and acting performances. Even though I have not seen Jodha Akbar, I hear he’s done a good job there too. His current rate is about 10-15 Cr a movie. Wish you better luck next time buddy!

Spot No 3

This one belongs to Aamir Khan. Even though why he is not higher amazes me. He may not have too good a body to boast about but he makes up for it by his performances. As the audiences will testify, Mangal Pandey, TZP. He not only can act but also does so with full dedication. He is at about 15-18 Cr. But in spite of his position he still leads a fairly simple lifestyle and has not much interest in cars or properties. You have all our admiration Aamir.

Spot No 2

From being a waiter in Thailand to the No 2 spot in Bollywood, this Punjabi boy humble background Akshay Kumar has traveled a long distance. Sometime back I had seen a programme in which he spoke to and thanked his mother and sister. It was a touching real life performance and brought tears to my eyes. Can someone who achieved so much be so humble. This suave actor commands a cool 20 Cr a movie! Way to go Akshay, Balle Balle to you.

Spot No 1

Who other than Sharukh Khan can ever occupy this spot in this current generation. Needless to say, he’s the ruling king of Bollywood. At 25 Cr a movie he’s where no one in recent times has ever reached. No wonder then that he’s buying whole cricket teams!
