"The Firm" revolves around its' protagonist Mitchell McDeere and his law career in the Bendini, Lambert and Locke a law firm situated in Memphis. He graduated third in his class from Harvard and recieved offers from large firms in New York City and Chicago, but he turns them down for this small firm because of their seductions with a BMW, covering all his student loans and large salaries.
A high paying job with all amenities- Mitch and his wife Abby think they are very lucky- till they discover the truth. Something they can't run or hide from. They finally have to live in fear, not able to speak in their own house or car. Suddenly, Mitch's 'perfect' job is ridden with mystery and danger. The 'accidental' death of two colleagues adds fuel to the fire. Mitch and Abby realize that they need to escape from Memphis- and soon!
John Grisham has nicely sculpted this perfect thriller. Everything looks pink and pretty at first, but soon begins to fall apart. At the turn of every page you wait in anticipation of the thrill, but it hits you just when you least expect it. That's the beauty of it. Grisham has added Mitch and Abby's love story to foil the thrill component and their story is really adorable if not a bit cliched. Nothing new about it- they're a young couple with financial issues struggling to get through life, until Mitch lands his 'dream' job which later on becomes a nightmare. Bugs in the bedroom and car, the firm controlling the lives of the lawyers, one really pities the young couple because of the jam they've gotten themselves into.
It's not a bad book. Definitely a one time read, maybe two if you're a hardcore John Grisham fan. There are no amazing twists that take you by shock or anything of that sort. Read it with low expectations and you'll come out delighted on the other side.
