Phillum Farces, Family Shows And Some Ramblings

Well like any one else, this is my 2 Wons on the Phillum Farce Awards, that took place recently. Yeah the Wons is incidental, as I am staying in Korea now. So here go my 2 Wons on it.

*Did I Miss the Awards Nite?

No, not at all. Rule me out folks, I guess I am in that very rare minority of people, who do not get teary eyed and nostalgic whenever you mention Bollywood to them. And the **Phillum Farce Awards nite is something I would get the least nostalgic about. I mean considering that every Awards Nite tends to end up being the Kapoor/Bachan/Roshans Family Show.

I certainly dont miss some one paying a tribute to her dear Didi, or a Bohu wiping away her tears when herSaasu-Maa gets an award. I would rather prefer watching the Adams Family Show or Tom& Jerry on TV. And certainly all those Item numbers or whatever, are one big yawn. I would rather watch a Ramsay Movie or a Mithun Da classic on TV, find them more entertaining. Yeah and before you accuse me of being a White Man's whatever, let me state that I find the Oscar Awards Nite equally boring and overdrawn.

Not so Farcical

Considering that the Best Picture Nominees in the not too recent past, have been stuff like Dhoom 2 andSalman Khan gets the Best Supporting Actor over Manoj Bajpayee, and a Shehnaz Treasurywalla( who is she?) gets nominated over a Juhi Chawla for 3 Deewarein, this year mercifully the nominations were not too farcical. And I guess one big reason, this year was Yash Raj movies, getting real kick up their backside. For quite some time, they have been able to get away with marketing crap of the first order, but 2007 saw justice being delivered at last, as barring Chak De India,  all their other movies, were deservedly booted out at the box office, and that means mercifully we did not have YRF hijacking the nominations. Or else who knows some time in future we would have Uday Chopra being nominated for Best Actor. This has been one of those ocassions where most of the nominations for Best Actor, Movie and Director were not too Farcical as before.

Not a Single Nomination for Johnny Gaddar?

It was one of the best movies of this year. It had some of the best supporting performances you will ever see- Dharam Paaji, Zakir Hussain, Vinay Pathak, Goving Namdeo, each totally brilliant. It had one of the best soundtracks of the year by Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy and brilliant direction by  Sriram Raghavan. Yet I find it inconceivable that it did not win a single nomination. Was Anil Kapoor in Welcome better than any one of the above? And if you are saying that is not a commercial success, can some one please tell me how Swades was nominated, and how SRK ended up winning the Best Actor for Swades, though that movie was a commercial flop. And SEL's soundtrack for Johnny Gaddar was one of the best this year, how was it even ignored?

I have not seen Jab We Met, so cant comment much on Kareena's performance, but Aishwarya Rai for Guru? what for. Yeah I can understand Abhishek Bachan, it is one of his best performances for sure, but Aish did not do anything special in this movie. Just what she has been doing in umpteen movies. On the other hand, I am pleased at Mithun Da, getting a nomination for Guru, an excellent performance by him. Just that he was up against an equally rivetting performance from Irfan Khan in Metro. Both Irfan Khan and Konkona Sen totally deserved the Best Supporting Actor and Actress Awards for Metro.

Criminally Ignored

Dharam Paaji for Metro and Johnny Gaddar, Kay Kay Menon for Metro, Akshay Khanna for Gandhi My Father, Vinay Pathak for Bheja Fry and Johnny Gaddar,  Sarika for Bheja Fry and Parzania, Abhay Deol and Gul Panag for Manorama Six Feet Under, Pawan Malhotra for Black Friday, Pankaj Kapoor for Blue Umbrella. Some of the best performances last year and not one nomination or acknowledgement. Guess as things change, they always remain the same.

And Ranbir Kapoor getting the Best Newcomer over Neil Nitin Mukesh, yeah guess the Kapoor tag works. And Deepika Padukone, exactly the kind of female Bollywood loves, not too bold, politically correct, photogenic and no exceptional talent. Maybe Neil Nitin Mukesh should start datingSonam Kapoor, to be considered next year. Well till then ciao till next year, for some more ramblings and rantings.
