Are FilmFare Fair Enough?
Come February ? March and the season will be thick for the various award ceremonies from the accomplished Academy ones to the lesser known like Stardust Hero Honda Awards!!
But as the state of them goes who remains the genuine one?
There has always been an air of controversy surrounding the righteousness of these trophies whether it is the Oscars or our desi FilmFare.
The polemical situation is already kicked off as The Times have rejected their collaboration with Manickchand ? the Guthka barons due to obvious reasons.
This year too some actors are nominated in more than one category from the likes of Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra in Villain and supporting actor grades. Does that depict dearth of talent in our industry?. Does a performance like Sanjay Dutt?s in Munnabhai MBBS deserve a nomination in a comedian category?
This reminds me of certain blunders created by these awards in measuring the talent of certain performers. In 1998 Salman Khan for his 15 min role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was unexpectedly (even for himself too) given the honors for Best Supporting leaving worthy Bhiku Mhatre (Manoj Bajpai) out in the cold.
Even Khan accepted on the stage about his surprising choice over this dubious decision. Similarly Kamal Hassan?s bravo act in ?Chachi 420? was disregarded and Shah Rukh bagged it for DTPH. Such are the esoteric selections this year that Nana?s hard hitting performance in ?Ab Tak Chappan? is not even nominated nor is Amitabh for ?Dev? or for that matter even Om Puri.
What is the validity behind these nominations? Why not Rajpal Yadav?s poignant acting in ?Main Madhuri Dixit??. was not even nominated last year!! Is it because he is not a star? Or because he doesn?t carry a lineage in this godfather-maniac industry?.
Far west too this phenomenon prevails but on a much diluted course. ?Saving Private Ryan? lost the best film against ?Shakespeare in Love? and even ?Pulp Fiction? lost against ?Forrest Gump?. Even veteran like Martin Scorese is devoid till now as his six nominations didn?t fetch one, but hopes are high this time for ?The Aviator?.
But the Show does really go on! There are numerous examples to cite for. It?s a common belief that the one who performs on the awards night in Filmfare is self propelled for an award. Thank god at last they awarded SRK for Swades ? deservingly and not for Main hoo na!!
