Filling Out Application Forms?
Jul 01, 2001 06:38 AM 5533 Views

When filling out application forms, it is best to take your time and do it right. If possible, pick up and extra form, then take them home where you can fill it out at your leisure rather than rushing through it.

Setting your extra form aside in case of errors on the original, you may now begin filling out your application. You will want to use either black or blue ink, not pencil or other colored inks. These do not look as professional and your application may be discarded for something this simple.

Begin with the basics such as your name, address and other information which you know without having to look them up. These things should be printed neatly, not written onto the form. Pay close attention to detail and keep your writing as neat as possible.

Once that part is done, you will need to fill in the basic information on previous employment, education and similar questions. An important thing to remember here is to think before writing. When asked why you left your previous job, you should never lay the blame on someone else. If you left due to a conflict with your previous boss or a co-worker, simply state that it was a personal conflict. Do not state that the boss was a jerk, or that you did not get along with your co-workers. This looks bad for you and may cause your application to be discarded.

Some applications request much information, and other forms request very little. Always look for chances to add information which shows you in a favorable light. If asked what duties you preformed on a previous job, try to think of anything which would apply to the job you are seeking, no matter how trivial it may seem. Even life skills can often be converted into positive points on your application.

Other than that, simply try to be as accurate as possible on your application. There are certain things you may not wish to mention, and it may not be necessary to mention these. If the question is asked however, do not lie on your application. A previous arrest may not exclude you from the job, but if your prospective boss finds out that you have lied to him/her, your chances are slim of gaining employment.

Finally, if your form does not look neat and tidy when finished, reach over and grab the spare form you picked up and re-copy everything neatly. This way the form you turn in is neat and fresh. This is much more appealing to your prospective boss.

When you appear in his/her office neatly dressed and submitting a perfectly prepared application form, you will stand a much better chance of being hired for the job you are applying for.
