Do you enjoy seeing the likes of cascading waterfalls, delightfully unspoilt countryside, thriving little market towns, a gentle pace of life and traditional arts and crafts ? If you do then a little spot just made for you is Hawes,a big village or little market town, located at the head of Wensleydale. It is not very far from Filey.

Wensleydale, once known as Yoredale,is absolutely gorgeous and is actually the largest of the Yorkshire Dales. Busy little Hawes with its delightful cobbled main street,is one of its gems.

Small it may be but Hawes has so much to interest the visitor. For starters it is the highest market town in England at 850 feet above sea level(asl) and is surrounded by some stunningly beautiful countryside.

The town itself has some very pleasant stone buildings, houses ,antique shops, a ropemaker,a glass blower, a woodturner, the Wensleydale Pottery, and Kit Calvert's Book Shop.

It is also the home of that crumbly, wonderful, cheese, Wensleydale. This is arguably one of England's nicest and tastiest cheeses.

There is a Wensleydale Cheeses Visitor Centre which is well worth a visit. So too is the Dales Countryside Museum and the National Park Centre.

Hawes has a flourishing livestock auction market on Tuesdays and there is a indoor market on Tuesdays also. Just nearby are the fantastic, cascading, Aysgarth Falls, which are among the best waterfalls that I have ever seen.

For such a small place there is a good variety of pubs and eating places and a very wide range of accommodation places. These include the likes of the Simonstone Hall Hotel with rooms from about 60 pounds per night, the less expensive Rookhurst Hotel, the White Hart Inn,the

Bullshead Hotel and Cocketts Hotel & restaurants, both in the Market Place, and a goodly number of very homely

guest houses. Other alternatives include a Youth Hostel,Self-Catering Cottages and Farm Stays.

Although Hawes is small because of its wonderful location it does attract a lot of visitors. It remains one of my favourite places and certainly comes highly recommended from me.If you visit Yorkshire do try to include a visit to this lovely little hill town in Wensleydale.
