Femina is supposedly a magazine for the modern woman and once upon a time was the only magazine that could be truly called for a waoman of substance.

In the days when Ms.Vimla Patil was editor the magazine catered to the average educated woman who may be housewives or women in jobs. The magazine was very informative on topics that centered around women issues. The stance was generally to inform and not talk down to women.

Later as other magazines like Society and other trash began coming in Femina also had to evolve to survive. The unfortunate result of this is that now the magazine resembles a poor man's version of Cosmopolitan and Elle. I haven't read the magazine for some time now but recently I picked up a few issues and was amazed at the rubbish that was in the magazine. Even the recipes were no good. ''Ten steps to keep your boyfriend'',''Twenty steps to a great life''.

The magazine has been reduced to writing this trash which is available on any of the million websites on the internet. Would I recommend the new Femina for women-I doubt; it is crassy and has not much for the intelligent reader. If you are at the doctor's dispensary and thumbing through it while waiting your turn then I heartily recommed it since you won't pay for it through your hard earned money and there is enough to let you forget that ache for a while.

Competition and falling margins may have brought about this change or maybe the modern woman wants to read stuff that won't tax her brains too much in this age of information-overload and it may be a panacea for a quiet escape. I do not know I don't want to read it but go ahead and read it at your own peril. As for me good old Reader's Digest is good enough with all those mushy tales.
