Story:

It is an undisputed fact that Thomas Hardy was a master in his chosen profession. And surely, Far from the Madding Crowd amply proves it. Hardy had created an imaginary suburb in England by the name of Wessex and this novel was the first one wherein the name appeared. It was an instant hit when it was published and it enabled Hardy to pursue writing full time.

So, what its all about…….its about a lovely but a little wild girl(Bathsheba Everdene) who falls for a charming but womanising man(Sergeant Troy), causes a loving but passionate man(Farmer Boldwood) to commit suicide and marries the loyal but simple hero(Gabriel Oak).

Hardy wrote about village folk and village lore and he knew his world very well. He described the happenings of the countryside, the flowers blossoming in the spring, the tales and travails of the common farmers with such intensity such enthusiasm and such vividness that the reader is transported right in their midst.

This book is full of imaginative scenes, racy storyline, philosophical characterisation and some great low-key humour---Hardy at his best.

This book may even be recommended to those who are not into reading classics and are put off by their heaviness. This book is light on mind though a bit heavy on heart and is a must read.
