Why did Kunal Kohli make such a complicated movie? Why have nuclear missile triggers, anti terrorist squads and chase sequences in the snow ?? After a refreshing Hum Tum, and armed with a knock out star cast of Aamir Khan and Kajol, why not just make a simple heart touching romantic movie? Questions...questions... To which sadly only Kunal Kohli might have a completely satisfying explanation.

Something grates about Fanaa right from the beginning.

Kajol ( Zooni) a blind Kashmiri girl, comes to Delhi for a week for a stage show. There she meets and falls in love with Aamir Khan ( Rehan ), their tour guide.

Now ask yourself... minutes after meeting Kajol and her friends, Aamir Khan winks at them, bites his lower lip and in general, flirts audaciously. While this is pleasing to watch on screen, can this really happen in real life?

The first 30 minutes are full of shayari, drawing whistles and cat calls from the audience. The song ''Chand Sifarish'' comes on in the first 20 minutes, getting the romance underway. While this provides an ideal start to the movie, this song could have been delayed a little.

After many well penned exchanges of Shayari, Kajol confesses her love for Aamir.12 hours before she is supposed to leave for home, they spend the night together. The next morning, they say their good-byes at the railway station only for Aamir to board the train and walk out with Kajol in his arms.

Now comes the second baffling question: After Kajols parents ( Kiron Kher in a big let down performance after Hum Tum and a confused Rishi Kapoor) tell her that they are leaving for Delhi to meet Aaamir Khan, what was the need to go in for the corrective eye surgery in a hurry? Why couldnt they just wait a day or two for her parents to get there?

From this point on, it would be odious to reveal the plot further.

Fanaa relies on far far too many coincidences. Also there is a distinct difference in the treatment of the first and the second halves, almost giving you the feling that you are watching too different movies!!!

As far as the performances are concerned, when you have Aamir and Kajol at the helm of things, there is nothing to worry about.

Kajol as the blind Zooni is terrific, displaying just the right chutzpah and verve. In the second half we see her ina different light and she has proved her versatality again.

Aamir as Rehan has given a commendable performance. I though would not rank this as one of his top 5 performances. Shackled by a complicated script, there are times when you feel that he is caught within the confines of the character, unable to bring the finer natural nuances to the fore.

Kunal Kohli has committed to the temptation of having a huge budget and tailoring the script to suit the budget. This is where he falters.

The common man doesnt want to see computer generated simulations of the effects of a nuclear missile. All he wants is crackling chemistry between the country's most talented actors with believable situations.

While the risk taken with Fanaa is commendable, the final product isnt.

Fanna for you? Nope.
