Fan tells the story of Gaurav, an obsessed lookalike fan of superstar Aryan Khanna(Shah Rukh Khan) who lives in Delhi in the Indira Vihar neighbourhood. Gaurav travels all the way to Mumbai to meet his idol and to hand him over a trophy which he had earlier won in a local competition for giving a tribute to the superstar. But under some circumstances and an unsatisfactory interaction with his idol, Gaurav grows malicious posing to be a threat for the superstar’s identity.
Director Maneesh Sharma delivers a power packed premise to explore a territory that had already been discovered by veteran Yash Chopra back in the times of Darr. Fan works majorly for two actors; Shah Rukh Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. People have always loved SRK getting into the skin of dark characters like the ones in Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam but Gaurav’s character in FAN is the darkest of them all. On the other hand SRK as Aryan Khanna is awesome as a charming and stubborn bollywood superstar. It wont be wrong to say FAN is Shah Rukh’s best performance since chak de india.
With a fantastic first half the movie goes bit out of track in the second half. Because why would a superstar chase a maniac on the streets? Despite of awkward post interval portions the film gets back on track during the pre-climax. The entire series if sequences starting from Gaurav’s encounter with Aryan Khanna’s wife till the end of the film deserves applauds for the talented actor.
Coming to the technicals, the movie has a good action and chase sequences. Unwanted yet beautifully shot and stylishly executed these will remind you those cat and mouse chase scenes from Mission Impossible and James Bond series. The film has no songs as there are no situations created for one. The audience missed the Jabra fan(Vishal and Shekhar) song in the theatres but it was only made for promotion and marketing purpose. Special mention to the dialogues penned by Habib Faisal which are going to achieve cult status in days to come. Andrea Guerra’s background score in the film holds you tight to your seats and keeps the movie engaging.
The Deepika Amin and Yogendra Tiku play a good role as Gaurav’s parents. Waluscha de Sousa as Aryan’s wife is justifies her small role in the film. Sayani Gupta as the superstar’s secretary does a commendable job. Ditto for Shriya Pilgaonkar as Neha.
On the whole FAN is a movie that keeps you spell bound especially for me who had been missing the versatile Shah Rukh Khan for so long. Minus those awkward portions in the second half, FAN is the best movie gifted by SRK to his audience since Chak De India. Watch it if you are die hard SRK fan and if you are not, still watch it because you will be one once you come out of the theatre.
