Indian TV-An Integral Part of our lives

Great reviews by my friends here, let me share my views also. I feel the current serials can be divided into three categories. Saas bahu, non saas bahu & reality shows.

No doubt saas bahu serials are ruled by one lady Ekta Kapoor. They are the ultimate socio fantasies where a woman can be every thing from devi to devil. Ekta’s women grow younger year after year(read as leap after leap) and have n no. of affairs, n+1 no. of marriages, n+2 no of surgeries and re births. The illegitimate children, back bitching, murders  etc etc  are all part of the parcel. This formula made her so successful that she all most rules TV industry. Those who see Jhalak Dikh Laja 2 can understand. If 4 of the participants are from her camp then she has her father occupying the judges ceat can any one question about the introduction of wild card entry.  Except Adesh all other voted out celebrities deserved a 2nd chance not just Sudha or Prachi  but they are not privileged.

Beyond Ekta & saas bahu serials we have few like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai(SvS)(comedy), Left Right Left(LRL)(military academy), Dil mil Gaye(DMG)(life of doctors), Choona Hain Aasmaan(CHA)(air force)…etc. If it is hats off to SvS for being the ultimate comedy the same cannt be said about others. LRL started on a good note focusing the hardships faced by six cadets but went hay wire in between. SAB tv went ahead and opened an open forum on LRL. One glance of it you will understand that it is dominated by Raajeev Kandelwal’s fans. Most of them are very rude & impolite towards other actors and their fans and are more interested in RK’s love track. But irony is, it is believed that the channel and makers depend on this feed back and make changes in the story accordingly. So no doubt we had seventies kind of scenes where a woman cadet dressed in sarees and suits with her dupatta flying behaving coyly, exchanging glances with her teacher(a captain) both in class room as well as out side. I request them to change their way of functioning as LRL still has the potential. DMG also has love stories but one good thing is they admit it openly & it is doing pretty well as a love story.  it is too early to say any thing about CHA but it certainly has more fiction than reality.

Lastly Reality shows go a step ahead making viewers part of. All shows have esteemed judges’ and viewers verdict, Funny thing is if judges are paid heavily than viewers have to spend  from their pockets. At the time of voting we have anchors encouraging regional and communal feelings & at the time of elimination have judges singing the same song like “janata kis basis pe vote kar rahi hain” . Considering the fact that each SMS costs 6 Rs(hope I am not wrong) it is big moolah to both channels & mobile companies. Mostly they start with minimum 10 candidates & stretch around 3 months with wild card entries. If your fav. candidate is out in the beginning u are lucky otherwise…. After all the message is clear in some shows like  JDLJ or Nach Baliye(if Prachi is voted out again then there will be semi wild card entry but I don’t think Sony will be foolish again). Of course are bonus points like we get to watch stars from the silver screen according their or their children’s film releases. Other wise where can one get to see a Rishi Kapoor requesting public to support his son on the basis of the works of his grand father to maternal uncles to nieces….

Though the famous saying “quantity mars quality”  is almost true here, one cant dismiss TV as it is part of our lives. Thanks a lot for reading this review.
