Sure is fine!. Review on Everybody Says I'm Fine

Rahul Bose's directorial debut wasn't a box office hit and sunk without a trace. I wonder why. I saw this movie when it was premiered on Star Movies and realised that it's promos were clearly misleading. I liked this movie and must confess it was one of the better movies that Indian cinema has produced.... better than your typical family dramas.

The Story

The lead of this movie is Xen, a popular hairstylist who has his own saloon and lives in a studio apartment right above it. Xen styles hair for the rich, the famous and all the Page three wannabes. Xen is a sensitive, caring man who lost his parents when he was a child. He has a gift... apart from hairstyling that is. He has the ability to read your mind, know your thoughts when he's cutting your hair. So with every lock he snips, he gets to walk in your head and look around. He knows what secrets his customers hide, he knows what troubles them and what they fear. He minds his own business considering his gift a curse, but doesn't hesitate in using his gift to help, say , talk a depressed man out of suicide.

The Idea

The idea behind the movie is marvelous. Here is a man, who can read your thoughts, and somehow Rahul Bose manages to not let the concept look corny. It's about human relationships, fears, love and above all about insecurities which each one of us tries very hard to hide.....saying I'm fine. Xen knows their fears, he doesn't do much about it, only uses his gift to help every once in a while.

The Acting

The acting was pretty much ok. There weren't any scenes where the acting prowess of any of the actors was challenged. Pretty ordinary on the whole.

The Music

The soundtrack is very refreshing. The music for this movie has bits by Indian rock bands and collaborations with likes of Zakir Hussain. Three tracks from Orange Street's album Candywalk are also part of the music on this film.

To conclude...

In my opinion, this is a movie one must watch to get the feel of a different kind of cinema that doesn't necessarily use violence and other gory aspects of life in order to be 'different'. It's a simple movie. It just shows you that behind every facade is a person who is not fine. Even though Everybody says I'm fine :)
