English Vinglish is one of those movies, which simply touch you heart with their simplicity. Though this is Sridevi's comeback movie, she doesn't look one bit out of groove here.
Portraying the character of a wife who often faces ridicule at her own home because she doesn't know English (language of the youth), Sridevi does remarkable job. Only Sri could make us sit and take notice of the fact that we might have done the same at one point of time, but didn't think too much about it.
How many times we might have just laughed at our family members, peers for not knowing the Queen's language. And, did we bother to even say sorry!
In this movie, you have Shashi Godbole (Sri) going to Manhattan to help her widowed sister prepare for her daughter's wedding. Though she could have gone with her hubby, but invitation is all sudden and hubby has got some urgent work to tend to, therefore, the poor simpleton of a woman has to find her own way of going to another nation, that too without much knowledge of the language of the country.
So finally, Shashi is here after a long flight and humorous conversation with the airport staff and a cameo of Amitabh Bachchan (which is no way a plus point for the movie).
Once here she wants to explore the city, but how. She somehow manages to go out with her adorable niece and here we have a tear jerker (not just women but I saw men crying during this scene and I am not kidding when I say so).
She goes to a cafe and tries hard to order some veg food for but due to her poor knowledge of the language and that arrogant person behind the counter, she ends up running out of the cafe without any coffee or food but much of insult.
This is the turning point in the movie and our poor Shashi decides to learn the language and she enrolls herself in an English institute and there begins the journey of our lady in distress.
Now, one will expect that once the course is over, our heroine will speak impeccable English, but hey no. This ain't realistic and this is where the debutant director, Gauri Shinde, scores. She keeps the (not actually, but I would give it to her for trying) As realistic as possible and once Shashi is done with the course she gives a speech during the wedding.
A speech in English, though broken and not grammatical gem, but she delivers the emotions and conveys her feelings (which are integral to the movie).
Sri scores and her comeback movie is the best among all I have seen, so far. No comeback movie has been as good as this one. The French guy in the movie and classmate of Shashi, my wife found him too handsome, is also cleverly used.
