The movie
The movie is a story of love, betrayal and revenge. It is a typical Ram Gopal Verma type and indeed a treat for all Ramu fans. The title “Ek Haseena Thi” reminds Karz; again a revenge movie by Subhash Ghai made long back and gives a clue of being a thriller. But this is altogether a different than “Karz” and is handled very nicely.
Story
Sarika is a middle class, self-dependent working girl. She falls in love with a stranger, Karan Rathod, a businessman. One day he asks her to shelter one of his friends, who later turns out to be a gangster and is killed in encounter. The suitcase full of weapons left by him entraps Sarika. Suddenly she becomes a helpless victim and is put behind the bars. It takes times for her to realize that she’s betrayed. The later story is about her revenge.
Cons
Is it a thriller first of all? I feel the movie starts losing the thrill right after the intermission and doesn’t keep up to the audience’ expectations at the end. Some flaws remain mystery like the Pratima Kazmi’s unreasonable faith in Urmila; Urmila’s dresses at jail, few jail sequences without matching the storyline; the trust of a well educated and self dependent girl on a stranger; the infiltration and murder at don’s home by Urmila. Moreover it is little difficult to believe that a “busy” saif spends so much time and energy to invade Urmila just out of material interest.
Pros
I liked Saif in DCH, where his looks and body language exactly suit the character. But I never expected such an excellent performance from him. He is now indeed a mature actor. Urmila also stands to her strong role undoubtedly well. The lawyer (I don’t know the name) has done justice to his character. Seema Biswas and Pratima Kazmi fail to make impact.
Characterization is done very well. The mysterious Karan Rathod, a simple working girl and her transformation into lethal women, a stubborn lady inspector, karan’s lawyer etc look live.
The thing I like most in the movie is the chemistry between Saif and Urmila. The dialogues between them are really impressive. The scene where he meets her first, the scene when he rescues her from the rowdies, the scene when both play a game at her home and the scene when he finely enters her bedroom, all are amazingly beautiful. Few jail scenes, particularly the one in which Urmila meets her parents from behind the bars, are picturized exceptionally well.
One more great thing about the movie is the fight sequences that look very real. The cinematography, camera, and background score are very good and suit the theme. The direction is at par as per the upcoming director like Sriram Raghvan.
Evaluation
The bottom line says that the movie is surely worth watching. If you love thrill, excitement, something that is different, just jump onto the booking window. Ramu has never turned you down and he never will. Enjoy.
