Not just another Love Story. Review on Edward Scissorhands Movie

It’s a fairytale.

And like all fairytales its appeal is timeless. Since Americans have no fairytales of their own, they must invent them. This is one such tale. Combining the mundane with bizarre. This is to be expected of a Tim Burton offering.

It does not matter what times the story is set in, nor does it matter who the main characters are even though the leading lady looks divinely beautiful and our hero a lovable half human.

It’s a love story and love stories tend to be a bit repetitive. For we are after all only human. And must follow the human nature. You cannot understand the power of this story if you are watching it with your grandma, or with an evening cuppa in your hand, or maybe even while attending a phone call. This story demands your undivided attention. You must immerse yourself in this narrative, and in fact get inside the character’s skin to understand the timeless appeal of the story, which is in fact universal and transcends the limits of time and space.

I somehow believe that men are quite incapable of loving women completely. The reason why this is so is because men rarely let go of their alter ego. While what men seek in love are mainly the physical attributes of a woman, women look for something on a higher plane. Male love is therefore shallow and physical while women immediately transcend the physical plane and are lost in an unreal world that exists somewhere between stars and the sky. For women love is an all-embracing feeling of oneness with their lover.

The only way real men can love women is by exploring their feminine side. For men to be in love its important that they be dreamers. That they be able to watch the sun going down with utter calm and detachment. That they be able to dream with eyes wide open.

Johnny Depp is one such man. Wionna Ryder is your star-in-the-eyes teenage girl next door. This is Krishna-Radha, Leila-Majnu and Romeo-Juliet revisited, albeit with a twist.

For those of you whom the lips of your loved one are redder than the rose, who can stand on the edge of the world and wait for love, for those who love life in all its splendor and who love passionately-- its an order--- Go, watch the movie. You will not be disappointed.
