STAY AWAY from Dr. Mehta's Hospital, Chennai

I wanted to bring to your kind attention the *ruthlessness *with which Dr. Mehta's Hospitals treats its patients. The moment a patient gets admitted to the hospital for whatever reason, a nurse injects a needle (for intravenous drips) in the patient's hand. This is done not only for patients needing emergency care but for anyone who gets admitted.

This injected needle acts as an "identity" for patients. The nurses have been instructed NOT to remove the needle UNTIL a yellow clearance slip is given by the Hospital Cashier. Is this the way the patients should be treated in a hospital? Aren't there any norms that the hospitals are required to follow?

Also, I had an insurance claim from "ICICI Lombard" with "Medi Assist" as the Third Party Administrator. I had applied for cashless hospitalization, so the hospital sent its estimated treatment expense (Rs.20k - 30k approx.) report to Medi Assist for approval. Though Medi Assist claims that its approval process takes only 6 hours from the time of application, it takes about 1 day to get a response. Until then, the hospital refuses to proceed with further treatment. OR it asks for the payment to be done to proceed.

The amount that was initially approved was just around Rs. 10000. We found later that the expenses far exceeded this amount. When I inquired with the hospital cashier's desk about getting discharged as the doctor said so, they said that the total bill is much higher, which is much higher than the approved amount. I was asked to pay the remaining amount and get discharged or send an enhancement settlement request to Medi Assist with the total expense incurred for another approval.

THE HOSPITAL REFUSED TO DISCHARGE UNTIL THEY GOT THE APPROVAL which took another day. How can a hospital refuse to discharge a patient for the settlement of an amount from the Insurance Company? Shouldn't it be a matter of dispute between the hospital and the insurance provider for settlement of any amount as all the bills are prepared by the hospital itself (not fabricated by the patient) for actual expenses incurred?

A couple of weeks later, we found out that the hospital had given us the X-RAY of some other patient. It was also a mistake on our part that we had not checked the X-Ray properly which had a name sticker on it. However, I am not sure what kind of a diagnosis the doctors must have given based on this X-Ray.

I wanted to give a rating of "0" against all the options you have provided, but have selected 1 as "0" option is not there.

STAY AWAY FROM Dr.Mehta's. It is being run for just one reason - MONEY.
