I saw Down With Love, directed by Peyton Reed and distributed by on Sunday… since it hit theatres in Bombay on Friday. The best part was, it’s playing at my favourite theatre Sterling… Set in New York in the early 1960s, this is frame after frame of Technicolor mirth… complete with the outrageous 60’s outfits and hairdos, cars and emerging feminism.
As soon as I heard about this movie, I knew I wanted to watch it since I’m a romantic comedy buff and have been in love with Ewan McGregor’s voice ever since I heard Come What May from the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge… He plays the male lead, as the playboy reporter Catcher Block… he sings in this movie too, don't leave when the credits begin to roll or you'll miss it!
The movie also stars Renee Zellweger, who plays Barbara Novak, the author of the best selling novel Down With Love. And anyone who’s seen Bridgette Jones’ Diary knows she’s a fabulous actress. Sarah Paulson is cast as Vikki Hiller, Barbara’s editor, friend and confidante. And of course, David Hyde Pierce plays Peter MacManus, the clumsily desperate but adorable owner of Know the magazine for men in the know.
I won’t talk too much about the plot and spoil it for you, but I will say this movie is worth a see… Anyway, here’s a bit to get you curious - Barbara flies down to Maine to promote her feminist book, advising women to say Down with love! and just learn to enjoy sex a la carte, like men do. But the male head honchos at the publishing house aren’t too encouraging, and Catcher Block won’t give the time of day, despite coaxing from his boss, Peter, who wants to get in Vikki’s good graces (or should we say pants?).
Barbara is completely distraught, but Vikki comes to the rescue with all the right ideas and soon, Down With Love is a national bestseller. Now of course, Catcher wants a piece of the action, but Barbara blows him off… His fragile male ego is hurt and he decides to write an expose` by making Barbara fall in love with him. He disguises himself as Zip Martin, a shy, fumbling astronaut and accidently meets her at the dry cleaners… but is he the only one in disguise? What happens next, is for you to find out!
