You might like League of Legends or Heroes of the Storm, but you have to admit that DOTA 2 is amazing. In fact it trades blows with League of Legends which has a huge fanbase. DOTA 2 or Defence of the Ancient 2 is a online free to play MOBA ( Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) where a 5 vs 5 team battle takes place.
Winning is by destroying the opponent teams ancient, the largest structure on each side. Players get to select a character aka Hero from the hundreds of choices DOTA 2 offers, each with distinct abilities and functionality. One game lasts about 30 to 60 minutes minimum and maximum.
Money is collected passively but slowly, but you can get some chunk each time you killing blow. Money allows you to buy items from the shop which enhances abilities or serve some purpose. You dont want to die often because a lot of gold is lost when respawning. Honestly, it's the very first recommendation not to die, so try not to die at all. You can level up getting XP, which you get by bieng close to anything that dies.
You need to level up and power up your skills. The 1st three slots are basic attacks and the last is your Ultimate or Ult. The Ult can be skilled up once every 6 levels or so. It also has a long coolfown, so use it wisely as it can do serious lots of Damage.
You get to choose between two sides, the Radiant or the Dire. This does not affect anything but alter your base scenery. The Ancient can only be destroyed after you have already smashed all other structures.
But the map doesnt end with the 10 Heroes and the Minions. In fact there are neutral creeps hidden in different places in the forest, which attack on both sides you get closeby. One of them is particularly noticeable, its a huge-ass Dragon like creature called Roshan. YOU DO NOT WANT TO MESS WITH ROSHAN BECAUSE HE CAN GIVE YOUR ENTIRE TEAM A BUTT KICKING LIKE YOU CAN NEVER IMAGINE. Pissing him off is nothing but calling certain Death unless you have that kind of manpower. But if you do manage yo kill him not only is the XP Bonus Huge but he drops an item which allows you to respawn at the exact same place you died moments ago, saving you respawn cooldown and travel time, technically like having two lives.
There are various types of Heroes who contribute differently to the team, like Pushers, Initiators, Gankers and Support. Gank stands for Gang kill. There are plenty of terms you need to understand to play with people online, so that you dont get yelled at for not following instructions. Also getting used to lane pushing is very important.
The game has really light requirements meaning you can play the game even on most low end graphics cards. Ive seen DOTA 2 run fine on a 9500GT, which is technically a pathetic card.
