If I ever talk of a movie with strong characterization, one such character always springs up in my mind… that of Nisha in Doosraa Aadmi…. A character that can be probably compared with Zohra Bai (Muqaddar ka Sikander), Chhoti Bahu (Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam) or Rudali. What makes Nisha special? Probably it’s the careful weaving of the character with the story line and the impeccable performance of Rakhi Gulzar in the character. If Silsila patronized extra marital affair and Dil Chahta Hai glamourised love with an older woman, Doosra Aadmi had clubbed both these even before these two movies. Well… lets come back to the story line….

Story Line This is a story of a young couple – Karan and Timsi (played by Rishi Kapoor and Nitu Singh), who fall in love in college and get married. Of course, this marriage happens even though the rich father of Karan was not much in favour. But he accepts this and life goes on. Now Karan wants to do something on his own. His young blood wants to do something and prove a point to his father. So what does he do… starts an ad agency of his own. (This is one thing I fail to understand…. Why is Ad Agency such a favorite business option in TV serials and young movies?) His ad agency needs a good creative mind who can make the venture a success…

There is one name that springs up immediately… that of Miss Nisha. The eccentric and un predictable freelancer, who can reverse the fortunes for our hero. There is the entry of Rakhi Gulzar…. Looking real good in this get-up.. She is a non-conformist… Dressed in a thin saree and sleeveless blouse (something too daring for 1970s..), a lady who smokes, drinks and has got no inhibitions. Then starts the fun… Karan, who is in his early 20s, starts falling for her, who is in her forties. Nisha also starts showing her affection towards him.. something that takes time to understand the meaning of this affection. And then comes the biggest twist in the movie.. The entry of Sashi Sehegal…. Played by Sashi Kapoor. Sashi Kapoor is in a very similar get-up and someone who is a close look alike of Rishi Kapoor. And then the scenes keep shifting between Rishi and Sashi, between Rakhi and Nitu Singh and also the sutradhar role of Parikshit Sahani. So who is Sashi sehegal? What is his relationship with Nisha? Will Karan and Nisha end up with each other? Then what happens to Karan’s married life? Is Nisha really in love with Karan? Or is she after a mirage? Why do Sashi and Rishi have to be projected as look alikes? Why could there not simply be a double role for Rishi?

This movie is a must watch if you like love triangles and complex love stories.

Performances: Rakhi: In my opinion this movie is her best ever performance…. I will put it ahead of Sraddhanjali. She manages to create the mystery around her…. She manages to be bubbly at one moment and totally drawn out at next.

Rishi Kapoor: I often wonder, why Rishi Kapoor never got his dues as a great actor. He has done a pretty good job in this role and gels to the character.

Sashi Kapoor, Nitu Singh and Parikshit Sahani:They have done quite good performances in the short roles they had.

Overall: This is among my 10 favourite movies of all times. Even though it was only “distributed” by Yash Raj films, I see a distinct Yash Chopra look and feel in the movie. The highlight of the movie is the climax where the whole story restarts all over again. The direction of Ramesh Talwar, who went on to make Basera with Rakhi is up to the mark. Probably, this notable assistant director of Yash Chopra has learnt his lessons well. Music is average to Good. The most famous song bein Kya Mausam Hai…..
