DON't live up to expectations
Aug 30, 2006 06:35 PM 3647 Views

Originality:

DON happens to be the most keenly awaited film of 2006 after Krrish and KANK. Everyone is waiting with bated breath to see SRK's portrayal of the 1970's Amitabh classic. The music of the original DON was one of the best, and even today is regarded as a classic. Kishore Kumar's legendary Khaike Paan Banraswala has attained iconic status to say the least. Does the music of the new DON live up to the expectations? Read on

Track 1:DON theme:The first track is the theme of DON which is a fast and furious remix of the title track of the original DON. SRK mouths famous lines like 'Don Ko Pakadna Mushkil Hi Nahin, Naa mumkin Hai. Though the style is good, the musical arrangement is extremely ridiculous. Rating:1.5/5

Track 2:Main Hoon Don:Kishoreda sang Main Hoon Don in the original version and this time around it is Shaan.Except for the above three words, there is nothing in common to the original version. The song starts off stylishly and it grips you from the word go. However, when the first stanza begins, SEL suddenly lose grip over the song. The stanzas go from high pitch to low pitch without proper background musical support. Though the musical pieces are good in bits and pieces, they don't come together as a cohesive force to enhance the song. Also the stanzas are left half-done(something like Dil Na Diya from Krrish). Shaan does a decent job though. Rating:2/5

Track 3:Ye Mera Dil:Asha Bhosle's classic is completely destroyed by SEL. The song is done in such a bad way that you wonder whether SEL had to use Virtual DJ softwares to create the song. The musical arrangement and the DJ effects are extremely confused and bad.Sunidhi Chauhan shocks everyone by her bad rendition of the song. The voice of the singer should always be louder than the music but in this one its the other way around. It feels like Sunidhi is humming the song to herself. Rating:1.5/5

Track 4:Morya Re:Shankar Mahadevan enters the scene with this Ganpati song. A truly indian song, this song is picturised on SRK paying his respects to lord Ganesha. As with all religious songs, this one has its own flavour and is worth a hearing. Rating:2.5/5

Track 5:Aaj Ki Raat:Of late there has been an increasing trend in remixes which frankly have music trying to create a retro feel. Most of them however, fall flatly on their faces.Aaj Ki Raat is a new song which has the beats of the 21st century but the retro theme of the 70's. It is definetely the best song in the album as it manages to transport you to the olden days unlike other remixes.Alisha Chinoy, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Sonu Nigam perform wonderfully to this great track. Rating:3.5/5

Track 6:Khaike Paan Banaraswala:The song which everyone has been waiting to hear has finally arrived. Udit Narayan trasnports you to the hindi heartland as he begins the intitial portions of the song.Your attention is gripped, you are waiting for those iconic lyrics and then they begin; with drums in the background. Seriously, I was very disappointed by this song, especially since the start is excellent and Udit does a terrific job singing it. But, the unnecesary western percussions irritate you to no limit. The song appears like a Dandiya remix which is performed on Navrartri.SRK enters the song and adds energy to it. But by that time, you are dissapointed by the song, especially since Udit has done a wonderful job singing it,and the song is spoilt by the confused and unnecessary western percussions. Rating:2.5/5

In short, the music of DON is a disappointment. Except for Aaj Ki Raat, none of the songs really stand out. It is simply the basic mistakes of music direction which spoils the album. I’d listen to the original DON any day compared to this version.

My verdict wpuld be 2 stars
