A great classic. Review on Dirty Dancing - Hollywood Movie

This is one of those films that everyone has watched at some point in their lives and if you haven’t, well go and get it from your local video shop and watch it tonight!

It’s a typically girly film although most men I know like the film as well. Boy meets girl – parents don’t like boy – girl carries on seeing him anyway – parents find out – girl gets into trouble, not allowed to see him – parents find out bloke is actually quite nice – all happy at the end.

The stars of the show are Jennifer Grey (Frances or Baby!) and Patrick Swayze (Johnny). Baby goes on a family holiday to a summer camp with her sister and parents. She meets Johnny there who is the dance teacher. She finds out that Johnny has his own sort of ‘community’ after work where everyone ‘dirty dances’. When she offers to learn a dance routine so that a woman can have an abortion she dances in a show with Johnny. They get to know each other and become lovers. Obviously her parents are not best pleased and she isn’t allowed to see him. Everything is happy at the end though when he turns up at the end of year show and dances with Baby in front of the audience.

Dirty Dancing is one of those ‘feel good’ films. It’s not really a good film to get loads of friends round to watch in the evening. Everyone will have already seen it before anyway and most of the men will probably get bored. If you are planning a girly night in though this film is perfect. If you have nothing much to do on a Sunday it’s a good film to put on while you are doing your housework! You won’t have to concentrate too much on it, the storyline is very easy to follow. Make sure it doesn’t overlap the Eastenders omnibus though!

I can’t fault the acting in the film, although it’s nothing outstanding everyone plays their part well. There are not special effects or great soundtracks either, just a very average film.

Jennifer Grey who plays the part of Baby is very good. She plays the young girl just starting get interested in men very well. It’s a shame she hasn’t been in any other really well known films. Patrick Swayze on the otherhand has been in loads of films though I think Dirty Dancing was one of the films that made him so well known. I suppose at the time this film was out Patrick Swayze would have been one of the men to like at the time, he’s not quite the same now he’s a bit older but I suppose there could still be an attraction there, not my type though. He does have a lot of money though…….

Overall a great film to watch on your own if you need a bit of entertainment to fill a gap in the day. A classic film which will never date. It’s a more true to life film that what we get now, no flying spaceships or stuff blowing up and it makes a nice change to have a film which you don’t have to concentrate hard for two hours on just to understand the storyline.
