Well, SRK is back and this time with his'omni-hit' screen partner- Kajol. Rohit Shetty's flying cars, Varun Dhawan's effort to create a comic+macho+romantic(a.k.a. masala) image of himself and length of movie were the'not so cool' factors of the flick.
They definitely were able to sell what they marketed- SRK and Kajol jodi. Lets admit, this will always sell.
To make it more understandable,
Story line/Plot - Ok, its not the firs time I am seeing a movie with twists in story. In the age of Jason Bourne and Game of thrones, you cant really excite the viewers with pseudo surprises. At one spot, movie abruptly goes back 15 years and in an effort to include everything(Comedy, action, drama.) it did not let me decide the genre of the movie(so I chose Drama!). You will find all family bondings in here - Partner love, Sibling love, Paternal love(that reminds me. no mothers!).
There are some scenic shots of streets of Bulgaria(at one point it felt like London to me. maybe its because I live in UK but I could be wrong). SRK and Kajol are from rival families who are in crime business. They fall in love, they get separated after some misunderstanding. 15 years later, their siblings fall in love with each other. Now, they cant get married because their elder brother/sister does not get along anymore. The misunderstandings are cleared eventually and its a happy family at the end. That's 2 hours 28 minutes explained in 60 words!
Action - What else to expect from a Rohit Shetty film but probably its time he starts experimenting and give the image of'car flyer' a break! Ok, we will remember him for this and he did not overdo it in Dilwale either. And personally if I can accept Bond chasing the baddies on a plane while the chased is in a car(does the planes fly that slow?) I can accept some tumbling cars.
Songs - Acceptable, did not bore me. The lead song -Gehua with SRK's signature steps are a treat.
Boman Irani was fit for the role but the character itself was not very fit for the plot. It was too comic in the present and too serious in the past(except for light moments between the lead pair in Bulgaria). If it wouldn't have been the charm of Kabir Bedi and Vinod Khanna, I would have missed those characters altogether. Sanjay Mishra nailed it with his comedy. Johnny Lever needs a break!
Verdict? - I am pleased that I went to watch the movie disregarding some of the comments on internet. I believe one should give the actor(and the crew) his due if you have some faith in them that they will not let you down. SRK is a delight to watch and he definitely stands out from the crowd in the film as an experienced actor. Its a must watch if you are a SRK and/or Kajol fan. Not a must watch if you are more of off-beat type.
Bottom line is positive as per me so its worth watching(at least once)!
Take care
