Yesterday I watched as Amitabh Bachan spoke of one of the icons on Indian cinema Shri Dilip Kumar.

I watched as the man slowly moved forward to collect his film fare award. It was depressing to see Dilip Kumar old and frail it reminded me that time flies and we all get old. I felt my age.

I best remember the Dilip Kumar as the dashing prince in Kohinoor. He was debonair and dashing and made the movie highly entertaining. This was in those days of little or no technology and the movie depended a lot on its actors and not on technology which made the Matrix such a big hit.

Actors like Dilip in Bollywood and Sivaji Ganeshan in the south were accused many a time for overacting. But the fact remains that in those days the movie depended a lot on these actors and little melodrama was necessary to catch the crowd lol.

Dilip Kumar was famous as the Tragedy King what with his roles in Devdas and Mughal E Azam, but I prefer him in the lighter roles he essayed in Movies like Kohinoor, Azad, Ram aur Shyam.

In the role of the Prince in Kohinoor , as said before he was dashing and debonair and so handsome. He played the role so lightly and so effectively we could sense his enchantment.

As he strode about as the bold thief in Azad we could feel the Aura of the indomitable thief.

Ram aur Shyam was one of the earliest movies on identical twins and I still enjoy it better than the later remakes with Hema Malini and Sridevi.

Dilip Kumar acted in so many memorable movies and many of them had lilting songs and haunting melodies. Who can forget Madhumati and its songs, or who can forget a lovelorn Dilip singing ` Ye mera Diwanapan in Yahudi. Or the rustic Dilip togged out in Suit and Boot singing ` Sala me to Saab Ban gaya. Ganga Jamuna was another memorable film where Dilip brought the character to life.

Dilip Kumar did act in many inane and stupid movies which I cannot even recollect now, but the Dilip I remembered when I watched him yesterday was the Dilip Kumar striding the Silver screen like the colossus he was.
