Visually lovely, Dil To Pagal Hain became an enchanting fairy tale.....a magical and endearing love story, from the opening credits to closing shot in a dance stedium. Being a romantic at heart, I was emotionally drawn to this well produced and entertaining motion picture, enticing me to view it a number of times more.
Its a romantic comedy with some nice remarks about love and marriage. Very good performance from SRK as the very impulsive character Raj, and Madhuri is good as well .
The story is good, coherent through all the twists and turns. Some of the quirks are very predictable, some more surprising. Most of them are more or less funny though, or at least sweet or cute.
Rahul [SRK]is in search of true love. Nisha[Karishma] is Rahul's best friend and loves him deeply. But Rahul does not love Nisha. They own a group that plays musical dramas. Nisha is always Rahul heroine. But one day Nisha's leg sprains and doctor says that she shouldn't dance for 3 months. This is shocking news to the crew as they are having another play in 2 weeks time. So they search for another heroine and finds Pooja[Madhuri]. Rahul immediately falls in love with Pooja but Pooja is in doubt, as Pooja was brought up by another family whose son [Akshay] is in love with her and she cannot refuse him due to debt. Now Pooja should make a choice, a very important choice whether she should marry the true love she had found or she should pay her debt to the family which brought her up by marrying their son......
Some reviewers have indicated that the plot is boring and in 2 hours and 4 minutes takes too long to come to an expected conclusion. But the lyrical chemistry between SRK and Madhuri more than make up it. I would not go so far as to say that the film is some great work of art and do have criticisms with regard to it, but several viewings of the work have brought me to re-assessing my initial reaction. The first thing we may say is that the sound track is magnificient .
The beginning of the film does start out chatty, too fast, over noisy,flippant, and rather shallow, however when the film settles down to crusing speed,there are some genuinely romantic moments and my favorite passage of all is when our two protagonists are dancing to the beautiful tune 'Chak Dum', and of course they end up dancing in the rain ! That is superb ! Other nice moments are when they are shopping in the mall together .The scene where they are both talking together just before Madhuri goes off to her wedding i and of course the bit at the end where SRK is finally accepted by her. I could not remain untouched by these scenes.
Yash Chopra's directorial vision is clear and is visually stunning. I absolutely love the imagination behind the actual filing. You will be hard pressed to find another movie that takes the same route of visual appeal. World class inventive use of overly saturated colors and stop motion videography....
A good movie for a rainy afternoon.
