Remember the young smart Raghu Jaitley and the innocent, naïve but so cute Pooja of “DHKMN”. (Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin). Inspired from one of old Raj Kapoor classics, “Chori Chori”, Mahesh Bhatt introduced the new couple of Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt in this movie. This movie was out and out a light yet incredible movie, loved by all class of people for its clean and young theme. Here I am not going to mention the story as I believe everybody must have seen and enjoyed it. I would just like to put in my opinions on the movie…

This movie hit the theatres in the early nineties when violent love stories were in demand. This movie stood apart for its lightness and freshness.

Loved the plot b’coz :

For the light moments that it delivered. The romantic touch filled with emotions towards the end of the movie makes it even more lovable and enjoyable. Loved the movie also for its simplicity, its innocence and its comedy. The girl running away to marry her beloved from home and meeting a journalist who just wants to write a scoop by helping her fight all obstacles to reach her beloved. While helping her out, he comes to know that he is in love with her and to top it all the girl also loves the him. Then what…..the boy gets the girl and the girl gets the boy. The movie impressed the audience by just not have any of those amazing or lovely landscapes of foreign lands etc. but by the beautiful Indian locales down south. It was a pure Indian film. Yet it was a hit.

Performances :

Aamir : As usual delivered a splendid performance. He looked so untidy in the film yet so neatly performed his role as Raghu Jaitley. Always on a hunt for new scoops for his newspaper. The scenes where he tackles his irritating boss, played by Tiku Talsania were so hilarious. I personally liked the scenes wherein he tries to stop the car with his thumb. He tries it by saying “ Yeh angootha bade kaam ki cheez hai…” so convincingly yet could not succeed. The scenes wherein he gives all the hisaab kitaab of the travel to Anupam Kher were also just amazing and make him look so different from the pre interval Raghu Jaitley. The early Raghu Jaitley is clever and an opportunist who wants to encash the opportunities that comes his way. He is simply brilliant as a very carefree and bindaas journalist who matures as the story proceeds. In all, I can say, Aamir came out well. One more addition credited to the bank of good movies of Aamir.

Pooja : She was the freshness of the movie. A very different look from the regular heroines, played the spoilt child of Anupam Kher. She has this I-m-not-a-fool kind of an attitude but is almost duped by everybody. She perfectly enacts the transition of a spoilt child to a matured girl who falls in love with Mr.Perfect at last as her father (Anupam Kher) has to say. She perfectly complemented with Aamir’s performance. An all to all excellent performance by Pooja which she already did prove by her performance in ''Daddy'' Any other heroine other than Juhi who looked perfect for Aamir was Pooja. But sad again that they never got to work together the second time. Anyways their first movie will be remembered for a long time to come leaving last impressions on the viewers minds and hearts.

Anupam Kher : He plays the role of Pooja’s father, who opposes his daughter from marrying a filmstar. He even goes to the extent of helping his daughter to get eloped on the day of marriage. He was an unusual father who loved his daughter too much for her to hate him in the early part of the film. Even his performance adds to the success of the film.

Melody & Music :

Remember the songs which went popular for a long time. Though not remembered now but once they are played on the radio or TV, one would start humming. Listening to “Galiyant Sankli Sonyachi, hi pori konachi “ or the title “Dil Hai ki Manta Nahi…..”, the later one soothes ur heart with the soft music whereas the earlier one is a dance number. The other songs are “Menu Ishqda Lagiya Rog”which is also good, even “ O Mere Sapno Ke Saudagar…Mujhe aisi jagah le jaa” was also picturised nicely. Even the songs in the end “ Tu pyaar hai kisi aur ka….” Makes you feel the pain of a person who has lost his love. Just remembered the song “ Aadayein bhi hain..mohabbat bhi hain,….” Both of the them describing their beloveds in this song has some amazing https://lyrics. Hope I have not missed any song.

Direction :

Mahesh Bhatt did come out with his best in the movie and was successful in delivering a hit with such a low budget film. His idea of showing some unusual situations wherein the character reacts very differently became a hit. (Remember Aamir not shouting on seeing a snake and starts shouting when he sees a……..) and also father trying to convince his daughter to not to marry while he takes her to the Shaadi Mandap and instead advising her to elope from the back door.Mahesh Bhatt’s direction was par excellence which made the movie altogether worthy to watch. The art of making low budget movies and making it a hit is something in which Mahesh Bhatt excels. A simple story handled beautifully by the director went on to become a real entertainer and enjoyable experience for the audience.

With all the “Chalte Chaltes” and Prem Ki Diwanis around the corner, these are the movies that one should watch to get entertained in the real sense and these movies really make us feel lighter and better. Honestly speaking, I can watch this movie number of times and can’t get bored but instead enjoy it more.
