DHOOM

cast Abhishek , Uday Chopra, John Abhraham.

The film despite some cool promos , generated only moderate expectations among the viewers and truly like stock market , these days films are hailed or panned depending upon how do they fare vis a vis expectations and not on the basis of intrinsic quality. So if a film which is expected to be moderately good, is good than the entire world will go ga ga about it.

Something similar led Dhoom to a success beyond the general expectations. Every body who came out of the theatre after watching the film was left with a feeling of getting more than his/her expectations and hence the success of the film. This film, with its brisk pace and good performances by the leading cast leaves the audience happy.Though the bike sequences are nothing special and technically also the film is no great shakes, it entertains, which is the most important thing.

Coming to the film the film revolves around three main characters.

Abhishek is a police officer who is of tough and no nonsense variety. Though he breaks with item numberish song with his doctor wife (she 'paints' their house, and also drops her cop hubby at police station on scooty along with Tiffin box) his character is well defined .

The second character is that of a happy go lucky bike enthusiast who also dabbles in stolen bike parts, done by Uday Chopra. He is keen to get married and have a family and is constant touch with his 'mummy' (like Salman was with his pa in Hum Dil De..).He is also a good biker and engages in small time races and betting.

The third character is of John Abhraham, who is a tough thief and works at Pizza corner between major assignments.

So the story is fairly simple. Our thiefs engage in their deeds , the macho cop will have none of it. But wait, the thieves use cool bikes and catching them on any thing other than bikes will be uncool and unheroic. so our cop employs the services of the me too biker ,ofcourse his being a small time thief helps. And thats all. Though the story has fair amount of predictability and the the director's grip over the story slips during the ending moments of the film, the film moves so fast that the audience is kept absorbed.

Performance wise all three main leads have done justice to their roles. Abhishek's was an intense and sincere performance. though he overacted(under the influence of alcohol and Pa) in the Goa hotel scene, his performance overall was laudable. Same with John Abhraham. Throughout the film he looked menacing and 'in control' . Though his role was not defined/handled properly, he produced a sterling performance. but the man who really stood out in this film is Uday.

For once he has given a really good show. He has done good comedy, has danced like a man possessed, and I guess he can make salmaan wear his shirt, by taking his out! This film will earn him an acceptance as an actor.Apart from these we had Rimi who broke into bengali without and rhyme and reason and performed a few item numbers(gosh, hers was a cop's wifes character, a big departure from hindi film stereotype) and Esha who did what unsuccessful heroines generally do.

The film as some of the liveliest music which really adds value to the film and enlivens the pace(as against the usual function of songs in our films).

Over all an entertaining film, among the better ones we have had this year.
