Dhool, released for Pongal 2003 has been the first film for nearly a year to complete 100 days in the major cities of TamilNadu, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Tirunelveli. The success of the film is indeed heartwarming for Kollywood, as it would have given them a lot of hope. But Dhool is just a perfect masala by the team of Dharani/Vikram/Vidyasagar. I am tired of people saying that Dhool is a film with the sole purpose of entertainment. There is nothing in the film worthwhile, to learn or to admire or to be proud off. I concentrated hard and found that I could recollect a few concepts from various fields of study, after seeing Dhool
CHEMISTRY: “Isomers are two different compounds that have the same molecular formula, but different structural formula.”
Dhool is indeed an isomer of Dhill, the previous successful combination of Dharani, Vikram and Vidyasagar. Both the films have a same concept that one brave man can create a magic and fool out any powerful authority. Both the films move at rocket pace, filled with action, glamour, love and comedy and are devoid of any pathos. Both the films have been noticed for a witty duel, apart from all actual duels. The only difference is the location and plot in the film. At times, like in the interval, Dhool replicates Dhill in the structural outlook as well
ENVIRONMENT: “The industrial discharge into rivers poses a lot of problems for water supply in nearby villages”
The above point is the crux of the film. But the director should have shown more emphasis on the effects. Rather he stops with a polio case. And it confuses me to the most terrible extent, on as of when Polio had become a Water Borne disease. But I walked into the theatre with a pledge to not think about logic at any stage of the film. The director deserves full marks for his portrayal of terrorism due to these problems. The advice given by the Hero to the terrorists should really awake the angry youths, who are easily transformed into terrorists.
PHYSICS: Newton’s Third Law States “For Every Action, there is an Equal and Opposite Reaction”
The hero decides to see a ideal solution to the problem, by talking with his M.L.A. However things are on the worse, as the hero has to encounter a Mafia Gang and his unruly M.L.A. It is all actions and reactions, thereafter with both the protagonists and antagonists fighting with equal venom. And we all know who the winner would be. Similar to the Witty Caste Politics in Dhill, the Shakeela Issue in Dhool is interesting.
PHILOSOPHY: Humans have always a tendency to innovations. If they accept it, you are an inventor. If they don’t you are a fool
Dharani took a great risk in innovating a particular aspect. During a vital fight sequence, instead of a high velocity BGN, he used a folk song aptly rendered by an old lady “Paravai Muniyamma”. It is that song that sets the whole theatre ablaze in the second half. The song has become a rapid hit amongst all people, with a special reference to children. The heroic song was an innovation, and placed Dharani on the right side.
CURRENT AFFAIRS: The TV and VCDs have considerably cut the Family Audience from Cinema, and Todays Theatres are mooted by the Youth, who come in mainly for entertainment.
Dharani has got that point correct, and he has design the film to produce enormous joy for the youth. If you read Abi’s review you could find how the film was enjoyed by the audience. The director has carefully infused Vivek’s comedy, Reema Sen’s glamour and Vidyasagar’s Music away from the maintrack to liven up the proceedings. The song “Kappakilange” was a great hit even before the cinema hit the theatres. Their advertising team also gave an appreciative performance. And the orientation overall was to trigger the youth audience.
These were the various lessons, I had learnt from Dhool. What I learnt is not a matter of concern? The producers have learnt that it is Masala Season for Tamil Fans, and are investing in lot of hot chilly and spices. The result is we have films like Saamy, Dhum, Arasu etc.And if you would want to see class films in Kollywood like Anbe Sivam, you better wait…
Before I wind up, I would love to give a honorable mention about the cast and crew associated with the film. Though they did not give any mercurial performance, they did well to suit their roles to a T.
