Plot

Shaan(Arsjhad Warsi) is a captain of a down and almost out Football Club Southall United in London. The community owned stadium is at stake and the city council has given them 9 months to pay their outstanding lease or give up the stadium to built a shopping mall. Arshad seeks help of an ex disesteemed Southall player Tony Singh(Boman Irani) to coach them. They manage to get club t-shirts, football equipments and even a team bus, courtesy player cum mechanic(raj Zutshi). The only key missing is the striker. The only one person that Tony can think and that Shaan would never approve is Sunny(John Abraham). The reason why Shaan cant approve him because he is in love with her sister Rumana(Bipasha Basu) and he plays for the rival Club Aston. Tony wants Sunny badly in the team because he knows that sooner or later Aston will racially discriminate Sunny and not allow him in the team for the premiership matches and Southall is his best options. Leaving all their differences aside, Southall now have to win the premiership at any cost so that the 30 million pounds at stake can be used to get the land for football back.

Critic’s Comments

Lagaan, Chak De India, Hip Hip Hurray and to a very small extent even Chamatkar(The 1991 movie starring Shahrukh Khan – Remember?) are all movies about the underdog team winning a sports title under adverse circumstances and beating all odds. Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal is no different. There are a couple of moments in the movie, but overall, the film has nothing much to offer. The topic of the underdog beating the champions have been now done to death and the topic, I believe, should not be touched for a long time now. If at all someone wants to make a movie on the underdogs, take a topic like the 1976 classic, The Bad News Bear Kid. The acting is pretty ok and that Mujra number could have easily done away with. Lots of cinematic liberties are taken and honestly, watch this, only if you have a partner who is a Die-Hard John Abraham fan.

Psst -

1)

Andy Ansah, a former English league, footballer trained the actors for the role/ John Abraham had to loose lot of his bulk in order to prepare for his role.

2)

After the much publicized kissing controversy, Bipasha Basu decided to rope, Portuguese striker, Christiano Ronaldo for the movie promotion but the deal could not strike through as  Nike was sponsoring him and the official sponsors for the movie were rivals Reebok. However he did manage to get them to shoot inside the Manchaster United Football Club and a tribute was paid when they showed his picture on the wall. Ronaldo plays for Manchaster United.

3)

Southall football club is indeed a proper football club in England and like it showed in the movie, it did reach the final during the 1985-86 season.

Quotes

1)

“Tumharey paas ground nahi tha? Inkey paas team hi nahi thi. Sab Mar Gaye. Captain tak bhi nahi bachcha.”

Oops-

1)

In all European football matches, the clock always starts from 00:00 and goes upwards and not 45:00 and going downwards. Hence the time when the footballers are shown against them when hitting the goal is incorrect.

2)

If Arshad Warsi’s wife is shown as getting pregnant half way through the tournament, how come during the final, she is shown with a  proper pot belly. The Pot belly comes only during the 7th month.

3)

Southall is not a Premiere League club so its very very very unlikely that they would be having a live commentary with exclusive big tv screens during the final and most of the commentary being done in Hindi.
