First of all let me tell you that I go to see this movie because of it's media hype only as I do not like Shahrukh Khan at all.So, the movie starts by the news that Devdas is coming back to India from London after a hiatus of 10 years. His mother is very happy and enthusiastic about his arrival. But instead of coming to her Devdas went to her childhood friend Paro.
From here his mother with the help of his daughter-in-law decided to break their relationship. The basic objection to them is some cast barrier. However circumstances compel Paro's parents to fix her marriage to an aged man (with three children by his previous marriage). On the other side Devdas indulges himself in alcohol and Chandramukhi (a famous courtsean who eventually falls in love with Devdas)with the help of his college friend Chunnilal. However, devdas can not accept his failure and always feel that he has not done justice with Paro. With this guilt he dies (due to excessive drinking)while having a short glimpse of his beloved paro.
The movie itself speaks about it's huge budget. It takes you to the rich bengali culture of early 1900's. The sets, costumes all are just magnificent. The most appreciable part will be the Dialogues. The dialogue writer has done his job superbly.
After Darr I liked the performance of shahrukh Khan in this movie. Aishwarya and Madhuri both have done a good job. However, there are some scenes which are quiet melodramatic and unreasonable.Overall this movie has the capacity to keep you engaged for three hours.
